I think that calling MLS, the American Premier League is more commercial. It even sounds better. We will be called Premier like most good leagues around the world.
A good idea IMO, but maybe a name change at this juncture would not be wise. It seems MLS is making changes all the time and this sort of change could simply add to the confusion. Probably should have named it the APL at the start.
Major League Soccer is fine. Why must we be like the rest of the world. Why can't we play our way with our name. To Americans it sounds like the top level, as crazymlsfan said premier is thought of in other countries as the top level. The name and style should represent the country the team is coming from.
Re: Re: MLS should change the name to "American Premier League" The name is cool and all.. but i think its a bad idea. American Premiere League Major League Soccer They are trying to promote soccer afterall. With out the S in MLS, most people wouldnt even know what it is. APL sounds more like a collegiate division. In the US, when people think "major league" they assume the best leagie in the land. That could work anywhere else where soccer dominates the airwaves, but i just dont see that working in the US. just my 2 cents
HAHA I dont mind watching it, but I am not going to pay 50-60 bucks for the shootout when i can watch the MFL, EPL, La Liga, Chilean, German, Italian, Brazilian, and Argentine leagues for 35 bucks. Instead of changing the name, they need to televise games on basic cable. Like i said earlier...60bucks to watch the Galaxy and Fire is not worth it. The rest of them suck azz.
Kickass. I don't know if anyone's ever thought of this before, but why don't we have promotion/relegation like the European leagues? We would be like most good leagues in the world.
I think we should call it a "lorry" and not a "truck." And I think we should drive them on the left side of the road, too.
Uhhhh , to my kowledged there is only one other league (reputable that is), that calls itself premeir. I don't think we need to worry about changing the name of our league until we better the level of play, and get more that ten teams. Have you even considered how ridiculous it is for us to only have ten teams for a country the size of ours? Calling ourselves anything that smacks of a storied, history filled league of world beaters might just be construed as the next silly thing that american soccer players are doing to legitamize themselves..... in short it would be transparent, and rash. Let's actually BE a really good league before we CALL ourselves one.
Ummmmm, there is the cart before the horse thing again guy. Let's think about that ten team thing again okay? Or the fact that we only have a few soccer specific stadiums in this country, hell some MLS teams are still sharing stadiums with other pro sports! And then there is the fact that A league teams don't have the revenue, or even the potential for it in this country yet to make the multi million dollar leap to the big leagues......... Dammit guys, the leauge is seven years old and doing okay but it is not as good as other leagues, so lets try to get there first before we try anything else?
Major League Soccer I dont think the Leagues name matters, I dont even know what the Mexican League is called Sometimes it is called Liga Mexicana but i believe they are just Primera (First Division) Funny thing is the FMF is/has thought about calling the MFL the Mexican Premiere League. The FMF directives even met with EPL directives to get ideas. The first step was comercialising the Championship so now instead of Winter/Sumer it is Apertura/Clausura COMEX.
I like the name MLS. Re-naming the league is not a good idea. I believe that we should have our own idenity.
But isn't it obvious the league is already in the United States? Why do we need to be redundant about it? And the National Football League is already the Premier football leauge in the world, so that name is right out. Sachin
