NEW YORK (October 19, 2011) – Major League Soccer will hold the 2012 MLS Expansion Draft via conference call on Wednesday, November 23, at 2 p.m. ET. The League’s 19th team, the Montreal Impact, will select 10 players during the 10-round draft. Each current MLS club will have the opportunity to protect 11 players from their 2011 roster. Generation adidas players (who will not graduate at the end of the 2011 season) and Homegrown Players on the team’s Off-budget Roster are automatically protected and do not count against each team’s 11 protected roster spots. Designated Players do not have to be protected unless the player has a no trade clause in his contract. Clubs must submit their protected roster to MLS on Monday, November 21. The protected rosters will be made public later that day.
And let the teams protected predictions begin. I'll start with my team: Houston Protected players: 1. Geoff Cameron 2. Brad Davis 3. Tally Hall 4. Will Bruin 5. Andre Hainault 6. Luiz Camargo 7. Adam Moffat 8. Colin Clark 9. Kofi Sarkodie 10.Jermaine Taylor 11. Ching Released players: 1. Boswell 2. Ashe 3. Carr 4. Freeman 5. Garey 6. Watson 7. Robinson 8. Deric 9. Weaver 10. Costly? *There are a few players that I'm unsure of whether they fall under GA/Homegrown status
If a player is out of contract, does the team still need to protect him to keep his "rights?" I'm thinking of Beckham, in this case.
Yes. As an example, Portland took Findley and Bornstein in the expansion draft, so if either player wants to come back into MLS, they have to go through Portland in some manner.

Throwing out a guess for the Rapids: Internationals: Comminges Smith Nyassi Domestic: Casey Cummings (Green card) Mastroeni Larentowicz Moor Wynne Kimura (Green card) Pickens
Sounders have a bit of an embarrassment of riches in regards to midfielders and depending on how loyal Sigi stays to Evans, we could end up losing a fairly strong, young midfielder. Internationals: Rosales Fernandez Friberg Tetteh (GA auto protect) Domestics: Montero (green card) Alonso (green card) Evans Hurtado (green card) Parke Riley Fucito Zakuani (green card) That would leave Neagle, Ianni and Carrasco exposed, of which I suspect Montreal is more likely to take Neagle. Alternatively, if they leave Evans exposed and protect Neagle, Evans is the most likely pick. Ianni is also a possibility, but he's been a trainwreck this year, but seems to play much better with consistent playing time. EDIT: I completely forgot Miguel Montano is currently on loan/trial with Montreal, so if they like him, chances are he's the pick from the Sounders.
Projected Red Bulls Internationals ------------- Teemu Tainio Rafa Marquez Thierry Henry Jan Gunnar Solli Luke Rodgers Joel Lindpere Roy Miller Domestics --------- Tim Ream Juan Agudelo Dane Richards (green card) Bouna Coundoul (green card) Probably Auto-Protected ------------------------ Matt Kassel (home grown) Sacir Hot (home grown) Corey Hertzog (gen adidas) Exposed -------- Frank Rost (will retire?) Carl Robinson (retiring i think) Chris Albright Mehdi Ballouchy Dax McCarty John Rooney Brian Nielsen Stephen Keel Mike Jones Stephane Auvray Marcos Paullo Teddy Schneider Carlos Mendes Greg Sutton Tyler Lassiter As close to a complete junk-pile of exposed players as you can imagine. McCarty strikes me as the most likely to be protected possibly, perhaps instead of Bouna Coundoul.
Hmm, is this English in the press release correct? Shouldn't it be more correctly stated as such: Designated Players have to be protected unless the player has a no trade clause in his contract.
No, it's right as is. You're changing the meaning. Unless Henry and Marquez specifically have no-trade clauses written into their contract, the Red Bulls can expose them if they want to. DPs are neither auto-protected (like gen adidas players) nor do they HAVE to be protected (again, unless they have a no-trade clause).
yes I agree. When I changed it, I intended it to be what you stated but my wording of "have to be protected" should have been "may be protected"
I would post the Revs' exposed players, but lets be honest, they won't be chosen. I guess that's the benefit of having a crappy team.
For the Crew. We have some attacking mids (Gaven, Rogers, Ekpo) who are all out of contract. And 2 GA players who could graduate (Duka and Tchani). So that will have a big impact. Assuming we think Gaven, Rogers, and Ekpo are coming back, and Duka and Tchani are still GA. Certainly protect: 1-Marshall, 2-Gaven, 3-James, 4-Rogers, 5-Ekpo, 6-Renteria, 7-O'Rourke, 8-Balchan, 9-Miranda. GA's: Duka, Tchani Homegrown: Horton Iffy to protect: 10-Hesmer (would he be taken, we have a good backup), 11-Mendoza (big salary). Might leave one and protect someone like Gardner, who has been solid. And if Duka graduates GA, he'll be protected for certain, as will Tchani. Able to be selected: GK: Gruenebaum, Riggs D: Francis, Veeder, Williams D/M: Gardner, Gehrig, Sippola M: Anor, Burns, Rusmir, Grossman, Prim M/F: Meram F: Heinemann, Cunningham
Based on the historical numbers (minutes played) i would say it's extremely likely that at least one, and possibly both, of Dilly Duka and Tony Tchani will be graduated from Gen Adidas.
I don't like these rules one bit. They can't come up with some other method of expansion teams recruiting players? Don't like how other teams will develop players only to have them stolen by another team.
I know all these things happen very quickly chronologically... can anyone who knows exactly put them in precise order and timeline? Day 0: MLS Cup Day 1a: Protected Lists released Day 1b: Trade window opens Day 1c: GA graduation Day 2a: Expansion draft Day 2b: Trade window closes
Yes, especially teams that aren't really 'expansion' teams (Seattle, Vancouver, Portland, Montreal). They already have players, a brand, FO, etc. It's different for teams like RSL, Chivas, and Philly who are truly starting from scratch. In terms of GA, Tchani hasn't seen the field yet for us, I wonder if that would have an impact?
So 10 teams will lose an undesirable player. All that the fans get is a feeling of disappointment. All that the owner gets is a 1/18th slice of that $40m expansion fee. I'll bet the owners don't mind this expansion draft one bit.
I really cant see Bouna protected. Backe doesnt like him at all not to mention he makes like 175k a year.
According to the Climbing the Ladder blog (I think run by scaryice?), GA graduation is most closely related to MLS playing minutes. Wikipedia has him for 42 appearances, which is way more than enough. Also, it's a little disingenuous to suggest that USL expansion teams have a huge advantage... All those players have to be taken with the extra discovery slots afforded to all expansion teams. Every MLS team was welcome to sign Alonso, Le Toux, Nyassi, Levesque, Zach Scott, etc, if they'd wanted to... As far as Seattle was concerned, they were successful because nobody got injured the entire season, more than anything.
My understanding is that player contract run through Dec. 31 of the year. IF that is true, and IF LAG has given Beckham a no-trade clause (which seems likely) than LAG's obligations continue through year end. If the "no trade" clause requires LAG to draft protect DB from any drafts to the end of the contract, then they have to put him on the protected list.
is the deal about protecting no more then 3 Internationals still on the books? and also, are there still teams that need to protect these internationals despite poor quality to make league quota?
