Roy Lassiter has the scoring record with 27 goals. Two players have scored 26 and Edson Buddle is currently on track to break the record with 5 goals in 3 games, but even as a Galaxy supporter, I doubt Buddle will be able to do it. What are some other records you think have a chance of coming down this season? Another I can think of, although not really a record, is the domestic treble (US Open Cup, Supporters Shield, MLS Cup). Based on the first three games, I think the Galaxy could be the first team to ever pull this off.
Here are a list of all MLS single season records I've found: *Most goals in a season: Roy Lassiter - 27 (1996) Most goals in a game: Clint Mathis - 5 (August 26, 2000) *Most assists in a season: Carlos Valderrama - 26 (2000) Most shutouts in a season: Tony Meola - 16 (2000) Lowest GAA in a season: Pat Onstad - 0.82 (2007) I've put a star next to the ones that I think will eventually be broken. I'm not sure about the shoutouts in a season. Seems like MLS is getting better strikers so I doubt this will ever be broken.
Buddle is up to 7 goals in 4 games. He's on pace to break the record for goals in a season. We'll see how he does as the season progresses but its looking very good right now.
You also how to think that these will eventually get broken because MLS should start playing more than 30 games starting next year so that the schedule stays balanced (at least I really hope they do). So the goals and assists would have a better chance of getting broken. That would also help the shutouts record to be broken, and the GAA. So yea the records have a better chance of getting broken in the next few years, but what also makes it hard is teams aren't not as reliant on one-two players as much. So goals and assists tend to get more spread out. Will be interesting to see if Buddle can keep it up this year... although I doubt it I still won't count him incapable.
How would more games help the GAA record to be broken? If anything it would make it harder. Fewer games mean higher variance in GAA.
It would be harder, but at the same time as you said it allows for more variance so there is a chance that it could get a lower GAA. If you assume a goalie can get a GAA as low as Onstads in 30 games they then have a good chance of getting lower in the remaining number of games. Assuming 34 game season you only need to get 3 or less goals allowed in the final 4 games. For a 38 it'd be 6 goals in 8 games. Both of which are reasonable assuming the goalie gets the same GAA in the old amount of games.
Buddle has already broken one record. No one has ever scored the first seven goals for their team to start the season. http://www.kansascity.com/2010/04/20/1888832/extra-time-041910-the-nightly.html
They almost certainly won't. They've never gone beyond 32 before, and there's already issues with early/late season games (weather) or weeknight games so they won't be adding more low-attendance games to the schedule.
No. Fewer games allows for more variance. Like how Curtis Spiteri had a 12.0 GAA and Ricketts has a 0.0. You said it'd be harder with less games. Think of it this way, if the season was 5 games long, the record would have been broken this year already.
Since they play in the Champions League, maybe he could have a shot at Carlos Ruiz's record: 35 goals in all competitions (in only 36 games).
No goals for Buddle, but Donovan Ricketts gets one step closer to shutout record, and possible the GAA record.
He's the only one who's had a chance, but unfortunately for him he's got to score the goals for the Crew .... if they'd have had another true scorer, he'd have 40 in a season by now
Donovan is very close to being on pace for it. He'll miss games, and possibly won't be back next year. If he is though, he has a shot at some point I imagine. I agree with you in general though, especially since secondary assists aren't as cheap now.
Donovan is up to 9 assists, almost 50% to the record of 20. Buddle is still stuck at 9 goals, the record is 26 Ricketts is up to 6 shutouts, the record is 16
Lassiter had 27 goals in 30 games. Stern John had 26 goals in 27 games in '98, better Goals/Game. I think someone else had monster goals/game season (at or over 1 goal/game) but I can't remember whom.
Another shutout for Ricketts brings him up to 7. One shy of the halfway point. Has still only conceded two goals.
Half way to matching the shutout record for Ricketts. He's also on track for lowest GAA and the Galaxy are on track for fewest goals conceded in a season.
Goals in a season: Chris Wondolowski (2012) and Bradley Wright-Phillips (2014) tied the record Assists in a season: Record of 26 stands, Landon Donovan (19 in 2014) had the most in a season from 2010 to 2014 Shutouts in a season: Record of 16 stands, Jimmy Nielsen (15 in 2012) had the most in a season from 2010 to 2014
