YOUR FIRST TIME! WTF! It's easily the nicest stadium in the entire sports world. It makes The Bob look like a piece of krap.
I know man, what can I say, I've deprived myself for a long time. Pretty excited, how much are beers there now? $20-$25?
Does anybody know what the ticket situation is for the Saturday night Desert Cup matches in Tucson? I'm thinking about driving down from Phoenix, but if tickets aren't going to be available I'll save myself the gas $.
tickets are still available for $12 to tomorrows game. Capacity is at 10k, and there only expecting 9k, so I wouldn't worry to much. Games start at 6, so I would be there by 5-5:30
Re: MLS 2011 Pre-Season in Arizona Very last minute info Today at Casa Grande starting at 4pm FC Dallas v RBNY(reserves) FC Dallas v Edmonton
I drove down to Grande Sports Complex today with my 3-year old to watch the "11 am" FC Dallas/NYRB game and surprise(!) it's an NYRB practice instead. I had my FC Dallas inaugural jersey on, we were psyched and the tyke and I were very disappointed. Rafa Marquez was the only player who came over to the 30-or so fans after practice to sign shirts. Classy. My opinion of him went up a notch. But honestly, what a joke. If MLS wants to be a big 3 sport in this country then it has to get it's act together. I drove an hour down to Big House from Gilbert for nothing and the scheduling snafus and lack of good info makes MLS look like amateur hour. They have a real opportunity to get some excitement about the game going in AZ but that doesn't seem to be a priority. I have tix for me and the toddler to go to the game tomorrow night. Will they change the time on that, too?
We have a block of 8 in section 131. It will be my second time at Glendale Stadium. The unfortunate thing is that unless you read the BigSoccer discussion forums or listen to hispanic radio, you won't even know about this game. This game was hardly promoted. "The powers that be" view Phoenix as a hispanic only market when it comes to soccer. Incidentally, I call it Glendale Stadium or perhaps Diploma Mill of Phoenix Stadium, but I will never call it University of Phoenix Stadium.
I watch EPL on FSC but I rarely pay attention to the commercials. Pero he escuchado los anuncios en el radio hispanico. I'm glad there was some promotion of the game. I'm sure I'll be one of the few blue jerseys in a sea of green jerseys.
The exact same thing for the pre-season games at Hi-Corbett. Thats why they were so shocked to sell out on Saturday. They were only expecting 3k on Friday, and 6k on Saturday. They got 3k on Friday, and 10.1k on Saturday. They weren't expecting that. The only advertisements were some newstories about it, and a couple of posters around the city, but that was it. No billboards, commercials, or radio ads.
I just got back from the Red Bulls vs Atlas FC game. Attendance was 23K, not bad. Most of the spectators (Mexican) were interested in seeing Marquez play....sorry, Henry.
Finally got home, that was really cool, I left the trade show I was at, at 7:00 (at Ft. McDowell) got to the stadium at 8:00 spent about 45 minutes getting through the parking lot, and missed the whole first half. What I did see I really enjoyed, Rafa's penalty kick was pure class. Can't wait for the season to start, one week left!! I'd say 23k was pretty damn good considering the non-existent advertising and the fact it was on a Tuesday night.
Jose Romero of SBN just used this game to argue that MLS can succeed in the Valley: http://arizona.sbnation.com/2011/3/9/2040843/major-league-soccer-phoenix-arizona
I like Tucson's argument more. Plus we have the greatest soccer picture ever. http://azstarnet.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/article_211f3d48-2567-53a6-80b6-c652b1e0dac8.html?mode=story
nice article till one mentions vuvuzelas. Those things should only be used in one situation. When the aliens come to attack earth, I truly think that will be the only way to scare them off from taking over our planet. Nothing worse than having one of those blasting in your ears.
your missing the main part of the article. "To have more than 10,000 people attend that double-header … that was nothing short of phenomenal," said Dan Courtemanche, executive vice president for Major League Soccer. "It really caught the attention of multiple people back in New York at the league office." And here is the pic I was talking about.
I wasn't missing the point. It is a great article and I am glad that both Tucson and Phoenix got good sized crowds. That doesn't take away my disgust for those damn machines of noise.
Re: MLS Pre-Season Visits the Valley MLS teams returning to Casa Grande for preseason. No word yet on teams training in Phoenix.
Re: MLS Pre-Season Visits the Valley Let us know when teams are announced. Colorado is confirmed for Hawaii preseason. Chicago, DC & Crew confirmed for Carolina. I think only Philly is confirmed for Orlando Disney. My guess is RSL, KC and maybe Texas clubs for the Desert Cup.
Re: MLS Pre-Season Visits the Valley KC won't be there, they are training in Florida and playing in the tournament down in Orlando.
There are only 8 teams left that haven't committed to a pre-season tournament yet. They are the Revs, the Union, Galaxy, Sounders, San Jose, Chivas, The Red Bulls & RSL.
Re: MLS Pre-Season Visits the Valley The firm commitments that I've come across. Casa Grande NE Revolution - Jan 21-31 Seattle Sounders - Jan 30 - Feb 7 Vancouver Whitecaps - Jan 31 - Feb 11 Haven't seen firm dates yet, but Real Salt Lake will spend some time at Casa Grande. Still waiting to hear which teams will participate in the 2nd Desert Cup in Tucson.
Re: MLS Pre-Season Visits the Valley The week of December 8th should be when the press conference is held.
