chris bergin is hinting on the www.ussocceruk.com boards that a deal is in the works to send another mls player to the premiership in a mcbride-style loan. He says it is a more prominent club/player and is acting like it is big news, but also warned that it may not come to fruit for a while. he did NOT say this... but i am thinking twellman/ruiz/donovan/mathis-type to manchester city. just a guess. http://ussocceruk.com/modules.php?o...start=90&sid=07d389767b8be7adc6347b83b1edbcd6
Well, first, Man City isn't a bigger club than Everton, so I doubt he would be playing that angle if it was Man City. Also there are few players with a higher profile than BMB in MLS. LD and DMB are about the only ones I can think of. So my rampant speculation is DMB to Liverpool, who is a far more prestigous club than Everton, and is in desperate need of a left winger.
Chino Alegria to Barnsley In all seriousness, my guess is that it will be a goalkeeper. Howard to Man. U?
Can't imagine Donovan going anywhere after he made a big case to stay at SJ. Of course, my wild hunch would be Twellman or Beasley to a top five club, but if such is the case, the chance of either one of them starting is significantly smaller than McBride when he was in Everton.
If it's a McBride-style loan deal, Donovan could be over there January 2, play for 3 or 4 months, and be back in the States for the Quakes home opener next year. So besides all the preseason training (which admittedly can be crucial), the Quakes wouldn't be losing out on too much for 2004. (About the same the Crew lost out on in 2003.) Of course, this is getting way too far ahead of the situation.
Actually, I was thinking along the lines of if Donovan was loaned out to an EPL club, it would be a huge slap in the face of Bayer. It would look more like he wanted to stay away from Germany more than he wanted to stay closer to home. So I don't think he has the daring to put himself in a situation where he would be the bad guy.
I don't think this would go through till this fall would it? We have plenty of time to see how the cards fall...
I don't know. I doubt anyone in Germany besides hard-core Leverkusen fans would know anything about the situation.
Why would MLS want to create all the distraction (to the player involved) by discussing now a loan that will not occur until next January?
if i had to guess id say ruiz/mathis/twellman to blackburn or manU english clubs are likely salivating over ruiz's combo of physicality and a flair for the timely strike fergie seems to have an intrigue in clint and after all the injuries, extra football might be a good idea twellman for the same combo that ruiz has, but to a lesser extent - of course hes also younger and would come cheaper i believe blackburn will keep sukur and perhaps look to retool the rest of their frontline crew - jansen is coming back from a motorcycle accident so its hard to tell what might be going on there - the only thing more noticeable than the 20 some odd goals yorke and cole scored was the 30 that they didnt - rovers forwards get some pretty sweet service from the likes of dunn, duff, tugay & thompson - extra goals and extra players for selection are never bad things to add when have those extra european matches coming (not to mention when you have friedel as a keeper, which i say automatically makes blackburn one of the favorites to raise next year Uefa Cup) of course this IS just a semi-educated guess so it could be both completely valid AND complete falderal
That was my original reaction, too. And as much as I'd like Tim-may continue the American-'keeper-to-Premiership trend, as a Metro fan, I can't help but to dream about the time when Grafer's pants will grace the Plasti-turf of the Swamp! Yippee!
I think the key words are that Bergin said it's a bigger thing than the McBride loan - which to me limits it to Mathis, Donovan or Beasley. Just don't think the Tim Howard deal would be as big. I'm going to stick my neck out and guess it's Donovan (don't think it matters if Leverkusen feels a slap in the face) as he's hinted lately he'd love to play in EPL. With Bayer possibly getting relegated, losing players, maybe they'll want to test the waters and see how much they could get for him (knowing he really does not want to play for them.) And if he does well on the loan, the figure could go up considerably. Plus Bergin also said it's a complex deal and that's why it could take so long. Is there any deal out there that's more complex right now than the Donovan-MLS-Leverkusen deal?
I may be wrong about it, but I thought that both Ruiz and Mathis were out of contract at the end of this season...
Toppmoeller is one of the candidates for the Fulham job. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/headlinenews?id=265783&cc=5901 He was quoted as being receptive to the idea of working with young talents.
Chris Brown to Newcastle... kidding... Mathis is indeed out of contract at the end of this season, as someone before me suggested. Howard & Beasley have long term deals. Twellman, to me, is not as high profile as McBride. I'm thinking possibly Ben Olsen, again, and him possibly to Spurs. Or maybe even Edson Buddle or Jeff Cunningham. Not that they have McBride's experience, but possibly more upside. Now say "Cunningham", with an English accent. Sounded good didnt it. James
since i do this on every Chris Bergin related thread... Why doesn't Chris Bergin actually try to report some real news, instead of either stirring up the rumor mill pot or posting three stories each day that take a one line quote from one story and turn it into another story?
