MLS looking to change the playoff structure. One of the potential formats is close to what Tom Hill used to suggest on these boards a while back. 8 teams from each conference, 2 groups of four and then a World Cup type group stage (top 2 seeds in each group host 2 games, and the bottom two host just one). If you have the Athletic, check out the story.
I like the idea - and bringing it on the season after the WC Finals makes sense in that casual fans have recently been exposed to a similar format. I don't think it gives the higher seeds enough of an advantage. I'd have the group leader have all 3 group games at home, the #2 seed plays the #3 and #4 seeds at home and the #3 seed plays the #4 at home. A briefer way to put it, the higher seed always plays at home.
