they make you walk across open pits of coals.

your friend is probably more right than you are about the running though...if you're not going to be in FANTASTIC shape when you show up, then don't bother showing up. because you'll only waste your own time.

they're there to see how you play, not train you.

    It's nearly all scrimmage.

These tryouts are more for p.r. than anything else. Unless someone does a "Pele in Victory" slalom through the entire mob of players, they should just satisfy themselves with a good story to tell their kids and the absence of any serious injuries.

I'm not trying to discourage him from trying this, but why go straight to the MLS? Wouldn't the A-League be a little more suited for an open tryout? If this league has players who were signed on an open-tryout and stay on the 20 or so man roster.... that's sad.

I remember watching a Chicago Sting open tryout headed by Willy Roy. They ran ladders for about 45 minutes until everyone gave up.

Oh, I don't know about that. I know some pretty damn good players in the amateur league around here that are better than players 18-20 on most MLS rosters. But, for monetary or other reasons decided against a professional soccer career. Hell, there's a guy on my club team that was a senior international player for Morocco and played in WC '94. Gave up playing to move to the US with his American wife.
