Regal CineMedia Brings MLS To the Big Screen Per MLSnet.com, four Wednesday night matches this summer are going to be shown live in HDTV at the Pavilions movie theater downtown, including one Rapids away match (7/9 @ Galaxy). Glenn Davis will be doing play-by-play with Balboa doing color.
Great idea. That is, it would be great if it didn't cost $10 to see it. It's like Jon Stewart said on the Daily Show regarding "Real World Cancun" tanking at the box office: "People are willing to pay up to, but not more than, zero dollars, to see in a theater what is normally free on TV."
Well, I don't have cable TV, so it's cheaper for me to spend $10 out every once in a while instead of getting cable.
OK, let me modify my statement to say that spending $10 to watch a game is a great idea if it means you get a beer or three as a result. Now, if the theater lets you bring in a few of your own errr, cocktails, I'm all for it.
$50 for the MLS season ticket on directv. It's cheap and you get all the games. That's where I watch the Rapids when I'm not at Invesco.
But how big is your screen? - I'll probably catch a couple because I work in Republic Plaza right across the street and will get off work about 30 minutes before they start.
We in the Bay Area wish we had it as good as you in Denver on this one, especially for the Rapids' away game. If Regal comes through on the picture and sound quality, it should be an amazing experience. The high-definition technology, if produced correctly, will be hands down the next best thing to being in the stands. If we had it here, I would definitely attend for the Earthquakes' away game (vs LA); don't know about the others-- might depend on how far away the theater is. Also, some of these games may not be available on the MLS Shootout/pay-per-view. (For example, the L.A.-Quakes game is not, at least in the Bay Area.) So, a movie theater might be your only opportunity to see the game. The games are all Wednesday nights because weekends are big movie days. One thing Regal is doing is maximizing usage of theaters Monday thru Thursday, when movie attendance goes down. It appears the locations (Denver, NY, LA, Chicago) were chosen based on where Regal's headquarters and regional offices are located (and NY, LA, Chicago are big markets). This is the same company/technology as done with with the Colorado State at UCLA football game in September 2002. There were 3 theater locations in Colorado for that game, so you guys should be able to find someone who went and ask them what they thought about it. Enjoy!
