Argentina is champions of Copa America with a 1-0 result over Colombia after extra time. Messi is ineffective and injured, but still a champion in his final continental tournament.
Say what you want about CONCACAF, and gods know we can all say plenty, but after this Copa from an organizational standpoint I think they're more competent than CONMEBOL
I was specifically asking about the play that did not appear to be stopped by the ref. The Argentine goalkeeper just held onto the ball and then maybe they were looking for a penalty on something. It was weird.
There are reports that police were going row by row checking tickets and removing people from seating. I assume that and pessimism are why yellow seemingly disappeared from the stands late.
Apparently 5-7k people with legitimate tickets were not allowed in. There is video going around of the suite level getting bum rushed. I would be surprised if they didn't let people out without checking for tickets.
Everything about this tournament has reinforced the truths that the Gold Cup is the finest continental championship tournament in world soccer and that you should never ever want a merger with CONMEBOL.
meh, the scale is just different… i dont think major crowd control is going to be an issue when juggernauts like El Salvador and Jamaica have a match.. the ref performances on the other hand were quite an eyesore..
Crowd control, field conditions, game timing, game pricing, officiating, press relations, etc.. I put all of that under "organization".
The real Pibe was in the stadium. I feel like the pros were: executives stayed in nice hotels, flew around the US, and had nice boxes. We made a lot of money. CONCACAF teams struggled. We made a lot of money.
Well I had a wonderful time watching these two tournaments over the past month. Now a week's vacation and then Paris 2024, here we go!
Germany was the best host of all time for the euros. The USA just absolutely disgraced itself. Perhaps the worst copa America of all time - even the winners hated it. A tale of two tournaments.
A post that perfectly represents an ostrich burying it's head in the sand. EVERYONE hated this Copa. From the camera angles to the terrible atmosphere to the fields from hell, bielsas rant destroying everything about the tournament, lack of security. Everything went wrong. Everything! It was a complete failure on every single level except attendance.
If "the US" had been involved they probably would have done a better job. But CONMEBOL decided to do everything on it's own on the cheap with minimal planning or coordination. This is all on them. And what was wrong with the atmosphere?
You know that, I know that, but in the eyes of the world it was the upcoming world cup host that failed.
Agreed. But you have to pay close attention to know that, and I imagine there are many, many people with takes more like @crookeddy above.
It's not really my personal take. I liked some of the tournament, in particular Columbia and their play, and their fans until they attacked Uruguayans. Just describing perception as I've seen it from personal friends along with foreign and social media.
