So, you thought I was not going to show up for this? Teams are getting dumber and dumber. People keep watching disaster after disaster after disaster of forcing the ball back to the keeper for no reason, yet teams continue to do it with further disastrous results, while being praised for continuing to try to do it by the fanbases. The world has truly gone completely stupid.

Must be an epidemic of this stuff since Italy just did something similar.. thankfully the heads of Fifa expanded the teams in the World Cup to ensure that Italy never fail to qualify again. These kinds of plays are funnier in Concacaf for the local meltdown of fans.. its the coaches fault..

If they don't put these games there, doesn't help much.

But think of all the countless goals that are scored by the teams that have played it out of the back!

Bring back booting the ball downfield for the big guy to flick on.

To be blunt, we can rant all we want about playing it out of the back, but unless you think football managers are universally stupid (which, I'm not sure I'd fight you on) there is some data backing this strategy up. I'd take the ongoing rants a bit more seriously if they could show that the strategy was universally bad like they claim. I mean, are we really saying Italy is incapable of implementing the strategy against Albania? I wouldn't want to be Gibraltar using it against Spain, but there are some teams that are probably ok playing it even if they screw up from time to time.

Underrated about this is that Guatemala had taken the early lead after a deflection (own goal).

I think it's less about the strategy itself, and being a bit more judicious in its use. We've all seen boot ball, flick on header, opposing keeper's hands back and forth before, and also seen a booted ball get jammed right back down your throat when the opposing defender wins a big header. I can see why coaches want to maintain surer possession in those cases. However, if the opponent is on you like white on rice in your own third, there's also no shame in hitting it where they ain't, to borrow a phrase from baseball. You may even get an interesting breakout with a smart and quick forward, since they have all their numbers forward.

TL;DR: Just don't be slavishly devoted to playing it out of the back. The occasional boot to mix it up is even quite useful.

Notts County probably suffered more whoopsies WPIOOTBGW than anyone last season and that probably reflects the level we play at, where players struggle to put passes together under pressure

Italy's goal wasn't a case of WPIOOTBGW. Players have been throwing the ball back to the keeper forever. In this case the keeper was on his line and there was a player between him and the throw-in taker. It was an individual mental error.

That didn't hold up but the game was a cracker. Denmark and Slovenia are playing some sport with a ball that is vaguely recognizable. The big draw for the broadcast day starts at noon.

I am just now watching the MLS Wrap-up because I missed all the games yesterday. Chicago LITERALLY scored its first 3 goals on terrible turnovers by Toronto in their own back third, refusing to either simply play the ball out for a throw or clear the ball upfield under pressure. I mean, you can't make this shit up. What are teams doing?

Edit: And in the VERY NEXT highlight package, Atlanta scores its first goal against Houston when the Houston player refuses to play the ball out under pressure, instead choosing to attempt a nutty backpass to the keeper. And then Atlanta's 2nd goal immediately thereafter happens when the Houston defender gets to the ball first, but rather than playing it out decides that keeping possession is more important than playing safely. So, he decides to attempt a chopback pass to a teammate in his own box, which is promptly intercepted and drilled into the goal. Again, what in the blue blazes are teams doing? Enough with the "we must keep possession in our backline at all times" nonsense. It does not work.

Edit to my edit: Do I have to discuss Cincy's first goal against San Jose? Good grief, dude, there are 4 Cincy players right around your box. Why are you trying to play passes through the middle of your own box? What is the purpose of that? I am going to give myself a stroke watching this week after week.

They all were watching the first 16 seconds of Italy v. Albania yesterday and thought 'Well, that looks like a good idea,' not watching the next 3 seconds.:eek:

And, on behalf of the Chicago Fire, I would like to thank Toronto's defense for sucking more last night that the Fire's sucky defense.
