USMNT fans have been telling me for years that the magic formula was just to get a whole bunch of players playing for big European teams/leagues. Am I to believe that they've been misleading me all this time?
of course. It’s that simple. It couldn’t possibly be a poorly coached team of talented players. A good coach can elevate a team of talented players and a bad coach lowers their capabilities. We have a bad coach. 11 euro players are essentially playing a pickup game every time they take the field. It would be the exact same for a team of 11 MLS players or any combination in between.
Hey bite me -- I don't need your nuance. Yes, I'm mostly having a go at dumb people. Of course it's not that simple. But that hasn't stopped tons of people over the years from trying to tell me it was.
Alarm bells are ringing around the #USMNT after its embarrassing loss to Colombia. One can only wonder what’s on Matt Crocker’s mind while watching a manager he brought back more because of the players’ opinions than his own:https://t.co/YNPBaiC9KL via @phillyinquirer pic.twitter.com/FFo7eu68be— Jonathan Tannenwald (@thegoalkeeper) June 9, 2024
Meh. If we don't go deep in the tournament to include a win over a top South American side, change coaches. No need for it to be a super big deal. We were utterly garbage on defense in the last one and a repeat would be damning.
My understanding is this tournament and next summer’s gold cups are preseason for the 2026 World Cup, so no need to panic; we’re not even halfway through preseason!

Yes. That said, those that only assign value and relevance to sport based on revenue and viewership are arguing that leagues cup is more legit than the US Open Cup. That seems like rationalizing.
It's weird how people take sides when they feel attacked. The Open Cup, MLS, CCC and Leagues Cup are all legitimate competitions. Competitions take time to get established. The Europa League started as a competition between cities that had hosted international trade expos The EFL League Cup was a money generating response to the unexpected success of the European Cup and also helped cover the cost of newly installed floodlights. The UEFA Conference League has absolutely no purpose other than generate money for those teams just outside the elite. I mean, what does Olympiacos's win actually mean from a competitive standpoint? If the Leagues Cup is still going in ten years no-one will question its legitimacy. I really want the format to change though so we don't have to cancel a whole month of the regular season.
Blame the planet for this. It's too big on this side of the world, it's too hot and cold at the same time, and the other leagues in CONCACAF come from some of the smallest countries and economies. . If you did change the time to play, what competition would you like to take on? NBA & NHL finals or the NFL? Because the MLB in late July & August has most the teams out of it but not quite into the playoff run.
I've pretty much been consistent about the mid season break as my real issue. I just don't care enough about the tournament itself but the break just makes the whole season longer and we don't have roster depth for the amount of games and an 11 month long season.
Group stage over 8/9 days the week after the Liga MX final. Knockout stages in August. Teams that didn't make the knockout stage would have the option to rearrange regular season games on those weekends, ensuring they don't end up with multiple blank weeks.
It's definitely BUSIER. But longer? MLS Cup last season was on December 9. MLS Cup has been held in December ten times in the last thirteen years. Having another team, thus guaranteeing that you don't need a bye week on every matchday, which starts next year, will help.
How do you sell season tickets then? So you might be playing but you might not, will let you know. Your bigger problem is all the sponsors from last year signed back up and they gained even more new ones. https://www.insideworldfootball.com...nveiled-leagues-cup-sponsors-multi-year-deal/ https://www.prnewswire.com/news-rel...s-partnership-with-leagues-cup-302164043.html
