This piece was posted on Sunday's News Section by Sitruc, I just wanted it to be read by more fans today.. MLS, Kraft Planning To Sell/Relocate Revolution after 2013? The Drug Is Football
As much as I think the Revs are a bad team, no fan deserves to see their team moved. After reading the article, I believe the rumors even though Kraft has a part in SUM.
One thing that rings false with me is the part about AC Milan being disgruntled, and Kraft caring about it. Milan got their appearance money, how many people show up is Kraft's problem, not theirs. It seems to me that if he's that pissed at his front office, (which he just cleaned out not too long ago, if I'm not mistaken), it would be a lot easier to just replace it than go through all of this Baltimore stuff. This sounds like an attempt to light a fire under some politicians for a new stadium in Boston.
It depends on how AC Milan's appearance fee was paid. If they were paid a percentage of the gate, then I could see them being annoyed.
Plus I think a bigger part of these tours isn't really just appearance fees, it's picking up new "fans" as part of the traveling circus. For more and more of these European clubs, having a global reach is becoming increasingly important.
Or whatever, yeah. I guess I just assumed that the big clubs get a flat participation fee, but I could be wrong.
This idea really makes no sense. I'm not going to bash Baltimore, since I don't really have anything against that city. But I really can't see MLS leaving a 1st-tier market like Boston without a team in favor of a second-tier one like Baltimore. If MLS wants Kraft to sell a majority stake in the Revs, their preferred solution would be for some other owner group to take over and keep them in Boston.
Agreed, but you have to find a local buyer first.. The NER brand is at junk prices in NE right now, yes? I'd also be worried about the reaction of leaving Kraft with even a minority stake in the new ownership group if it stayed in NE.
FYI just to let you know it was sent to multiple people. And the people who work for that site I know personally and have good inside contacts. So what your saying just plain false.
I feel sorry for anyone who might lose their job over this, but for the sake of soccer in New England it might even be better if they moved, and then returned again at a later date once they have a better situation and people are hungry for it. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Seems to me like the NER in their current form are dragging down the value and image of MLS in that market (to the extent that they're even represented in that market). And if there's any truth to that rumor and Kraft really can't seem to figure out that he's the problem, and not performance of the team in itself, then there is no rectifying this situation. God help me because I'm originally from NE and used to consider myself a Revs fan, but they're an embarrassment to MLS nowadays. Put the team somewhere where people want to see them, and return to Boston later on when you have a more enthusiastic owner and a decent stadium to play in.
But is the source credible? The fact is, this is single sourced to an anonymous tipster, with no one else willing to even comment on it off the record...
There's a lot of money in the Boston area. How much would it cost to buy the Revs? $100 million if you bought out Kraft completely? Plus $150-200 million for a new stadium? That's a lot of money for us mere mortals, but as sports team purchases go, it's pretty reasonable. Yeah, the Revs brand isn't great these days, but a well-run marketing operation could go a long way towards getting fans to come back. SKC's owners increased the value of their brand pretty quickly. A turnaround like that would be a good model for any potential Revs owners.
I don't know if the source is, but the people the people who write for it are. And the site never said once that it is a true statement. They just wanted to get it out.
Problem is land in Boston area is tough to get and you will never get any government assistance in this state.
fwiw, the tipster is anonymous to us, only because identifying info was removed prior to publication. it may be less so to the publishers. in any case, i fail to see how leaving a market is supposed to make it easier to get what you'd like in that market anytime soon.
And that is a problem... Running with a single anonymous source impacts their credibility, particularly if the source is wrong.
Lack of denial isn't proof of anything other than that no one wants to talk to the reporter asking the question.
TMZ - you mean the website that consistently breaks news on celebrity deaths before any other news source?
