The team moving from the NASL to MLS is now called "Minnesota United." But MLS can't have two teams called United. What are they going to say when DC United plays Minnesota? "It's United vs United?" The name has to change, so what should it be changed to? I say bring back the legendary name from the old days: MINNESOTA KICKS...
Up in Canada with their CFL there were two teams in a 10 team league that have the same moniker of Roughriders Dave. This same thing occurring in our MLS with United in DCU and MNU should be taken at face value. I.e. that in pro association football, specifically in English speaking nations, there are going to be many teams called United.
What does the soccer world do when Manchester City plays Stoke City. OMG! Not a big deal, they'll figure it out.
At one time, the American Soccer League had the New York Americans, Philadelphia Americans, Baltimore Americans and Kearny Americans. I like a lot of old NASL names, but not the ones that reflected a simplistic American view of soccer, names like Kicks, Sockers, and Stompers.
What happens when Manchester United plays Newcastle United? I presume one of those teams has to change it's name for one day twice a year (or maybe they alternate), because you can't have two teams called United.
MUFC vs. NUFC MANU vs. NEW MU vs. NU Seen it all, and don't think i've ever heard anyone have a problem with two teams sharing a secondary name.
They don't change their names, Newcastle United are The Magpies, The Toon or what ever S*nderland supporters or London based media are calling them. Manchester United are the Red Devils or whatever Liverpool support (or LVG)is slagging them off as; they are referred to by their respective cities. Minnesota United will be Minnesota, MNUFC, the Loons etc.
It'll likely be referred to as 'Minnesota vs. DC' or something. As long as they're different cities, there's no real issue about them both using United.
Wow, what a stupid post. This is just silly. Is that logo from "Schoolhouse Rock" the soccer edition?
They will say its Minnesota vs DC. There are 3 Tigers in the SEC with Auburn, LSU, and Missouri. It doesn't cause any problems.
Oh god.. I just noticed something! MLS just had New York CITY and Orlando CITY join the league in the same time.. How will we ever tell the difference between the teams if they ever face each other in a competitive match????
Hre's one. The Southeastern Conference has the Auburn Tigers, LSU Tigers, and Missouri Tigers. They also have the Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Georgia Bulldogs. And that's a 14-team league.
Minnesota United... Thunder .... Stars.... Loons.... something will stick (if not Kick) but I don't think they'll do a fan vote on it after what happened in Houston.
