Might be old news....sorry if it is...I didn't see this posted on here, so I thought I would share this with you. I am hoping Numan comes to the Metros. Although his addition to any MLS squad would be a plus. http://www.wspsoccer.com/news/?page=details&area=1031225928
I find it hard to imagine that someone would take on a SI slot for a keeper, given our surplus of keeping talent in the MLS. However Ronald is a great keeper and would make a good addition to almost any team. I hope he could get in over here, he'd make a nice pick up for NE.
There's no way Thornton was ever below 200 pounds. Seriously, there's no way in hell, at least from the time he put on a Fire shirt.
Wattereus played pretty damn well in his last game on US soil. Perhaps you can recall that one? Arguably best game by a keeper on US soil so far this year? OK, so most MLS teams don't list "keeper" as their most pressing need, but without salary cap and SI constraints, I have to believe that John Busch and Matt Jordan, at least, would have a tough time keeping their job over Wattereus. Earnie Stewart's played a decent game or two for the national team over the last, oh, nine years or so. Numan doesn't suck.
Numan at left back would help just about any team in MLS. He is a good athlete and hard worker, with an international pedigree. But it doesn't seem to fit. It's not like he's such a big name that he'll be bringing more culture fans out to the stadium just because he's there. I'm sure he makes very good wages at Rangers and I doubt he realizes just how much a pay cut he would have to take to come here (as the league surely wouldn't be breaking the bank for him, even though he is pretty good). No, MLS player personnel needs to focus on American players, with the occasional spicing with foreign players who 1) legitimately have something to add and 2) can be brought in for a reasonable wage OR 3) are young talents that can be developed for a couple of years and then sold (which hopefully is the idea for a Vaca) - we should be aggressive about signing young talents from Central America and Caribbean nations.
... Edwin Gorter was a great midfielder for the Revs and played many positions for the Fusions. Richard Goulooze (mispell) played very well at the back for the Revs as well.
Just when Adin Brown starts playing well for the first time in his MLS career, you want to the Revs to go out and spend a SI spot on a goalie? I always liked Gorter. He was sort of a poor man's Valderrama, though - could drop a ball in a bucket at 30 yards, but barely kept himself in shape and did very little running. Goulooze, on the other hand, was a complete and total ***************ing disaster from day one.
How is Numan not a quality addition? The man is a true professional, who will teach the younger Americans a thing or two about real soccer. If anything, he should be the type of player we are trying to bring. He is not ancient, he would immediately probably be the best left back in the league, and he is at a moderate price. What more can you ask for?
My point. I don't hate Thornton, but even if Ronald does play for the wrong Dutch team, I am a HUGE fan of his.
I don't care if SI players are old or young. I only want them to play as professionals and not treat MLS as a retirement home. As for Dutch players, I have always been favorably impressed with them. The quality of MLS is improving and the days that fossils coming to the US to pick up a paycheck just to show themselves should be a thing of the past.
OK, but I disagree. Wattereus made three or four brilliant saves, but Friedel made about eight, including the two before Abreu finally put it past. Dave
Numan is solid - I imagine Reyna has told him of the rising quality in MLS - and perhaps he wants more anonymity that he enjoys in Glasgow. He would be a great addition to the DC backline - keep in mind he pushes forward quite a bit for the Gers.
But honestly, how much true insight can Reyna offer considering he hasn't played in MLS or professionally in America at all?
