Wouldn't it be more appropriate to compare ratings with the NHL?? (i thought they just started their season)
If they advertised soccer the way that football is advertised, such as a small blurb in every daily paper, and ABC commercials (don't watch much TV, don't even know if I'm metered) blaring that the MLS Cup is on at suchandsuch a time, more people would watch. Shame... but take Utah for example. They draw approx. 2000 people for the D3 Pro League, they might be eager to see soccerfooty at its highest US level, don't know if anything was written up there since I don't live there but people there might want to view it. Portland, Charleston, Rochester also, but they probably are in the loop a little bit more...
Maybe if more than one playoff game was available outside the shotout, more casual fans might have known it was on. Personally, after an exciting playoff race, the lack of games was VERY disappointing. I watched a couple at local bars but that's not where families, (especially Nielsen families,) hang out. Too bad MLS marketing and promotions couldn't finish stronger. What are they thinking?
Well, if you compare it to the Gravity Games, you still get stomped. And it doesn't seem fair to compare it to the NHL: this was the MLS Championship game, not a regular season hockey game that means nothing.
They needed to have advertised it more, or even at all. I don't even remember ever seeing an advert for the upcoming championship game or anything.
I saw a nice ad for the game on ABC during the previous day's college football. Really, I don't this is too bad. The only way to get ratings for a sport during the NFL broadcasts is to show a sport young males don't watch -- figure skating, etc.
I had heard that one rating point in Boston equals 23,000 sets. What is the rate in Los Angeles? And what did you do?
