I would buy/ trade for Evander including throwing Rossi in if I had too (anyone but Cucho just about)

ship JRR & some money to Montreal for Choinière. Sure seems like they have to sell him because they don’t want to pay him.

Choinière was under contract through the end of the season, with Montreal holding a club option for 2025.

Cucho is staying put at the moment. This is obviously an ever changing situation because he’s, well, Cucho.

Remember how important I said personality/ego was to Nancy? Evander has been very public with his complaints, my guess is that his behavior would be a major turn off for Nancy.

AZ had similar issues but much cheaper contract. I tend to think your right but we need a quality upgrade

It's a shame they can't leave after the expansion draft. It might make an "unprotected" list a bit easier.

IDK, man, you are linking to a page that has Morris and Sands on the team. Forgive me if I don't take that as definitive. Especially when MLS still has him as a HG.

    https://www.mlssoccer.com/clubs/columbus-crew/roster/

As I have to remind some folks now & then:

    1) The whole point of this thread is that for decades the roster info on MLS/the team site was sometimes incomplete, outdated, or outright inaccurate. It has gotten better, but still is not perfect.

    2) Don't believe everything you read on the internet.

This is sound thinking, but not all expansion teams think that way.

Sometimes a fairly cheap vet or two is what teams want. I'd want one on each line. Someone to help with the culture, be an experienced hand, and can still play some. Be it as a starter or spot starter. A guy who can be a bridge while the youngsters develop but does not break the bank. Sucking is not guaranteed out of the gate.

If we have to protect Sean, he is a no-brainer and I'd leave Camacho unprotected. Ditto Herrera. Both and Camacho & Ramirez are exposed for me, much as I loathe to expose Christian.

But CB, CM, and another attacker (or two) would be my priorities. Buy Nagbe down, get another DP. We have 2 open U22 spots, use them.

He is still under contract until the end of the league year. He is leaving, not left, if you get my meaning.

Though it would be silly for us to use a spot on him. And sillier for someone to take him.

since Sean signed a new contract, he is not on his original HG contract so he will need to be protected

    I agree.

The roster profile report that MLS released in September shows Zawadzki as a Homegrown player. The roster rules say nothing that I can find about Homegrown status being linked only to a first contract or having a maximum salary ceiling.

If he'll work cheap, and I'm sure he will, I'd be perfectly happy to keep Bush around for another year.

He'll almost never play, but is well known as a solid locker room guy who can be an asset working with the kids and alongside the 1a and 1b keepers.

His age does mean that he probably shouldn't play every week but he doesn't need to. He's 2 years younger than Guzan and can handle a couple games a year, no problem.

I don't see this as any kind of a problem.

Why did I get the old profiles when I went to the roster profile page? Deleted my post arguing to trust it because I guess we still cannot.

There is an indication that you may lose your designation if you make more than 209k: "Thanks to the rule, teams can sign an unlimited amount of academy players to a first-team contract on any given year, with these Homegrown Players earning up to $125,000 above the Reserve Minimum Salary ($65,500) or the Senior Minimum Salary ($84,000) and occupying a spot on the team’s Senior or Supplemental Roster."

I'm also not sure what the hell the Homegrown subsidy is or if that played any part.

Based on precedent with Trapp and Morris, I'll assume for my hypotheticals that Sean is not protected.

Meh, I used to like Bush, but I feel like when he’s played he has taken a step or two back. I’d rather get a reliable decent backup instead of keeping an old injured dude around just because he’s local. If he’s fine being #3, that’s ok. League min.

Hagen wasn’t great IMO. And he’s an international, which defeats the purpose of the backup when Schulte is gone. Definitely need to move him on for someone else.

I have been curious about our ownership's investment intentions. I received a crumb. Although vague, I've been salivating for anything. So, I thought I would share.

There is a willingness to continue to invest. However, we are in a league now that has multiple owners who are willing to lose double digit, millions of dollars in their attempts to buy a winner, for whatever reasons. We will not be doing that. This team will be run like a business. It ultimately must turn a profit.

    My reactions to hearing this-

Out of the gate, ouch. That's not what I was hoping for. I was hoping that God had inspired our benevolent care takers to squander a sizable portion of their wealth in order to give us all eternal thrills. I want world peace too.

As I reflect on it, I catch myself slipping into very unfair, unreasonable sentiments. Our ownership team should be celebrated for everything they've done - the saving, the wins, the fan experience, Nancy, Cucho..... And based upon prior "business metrics," they took some massive risks.

I suppose I was hoping they wouldn't want to run their business like a business.

But here we sit, in the middle of a small market pickle. David vs. Goliath, yet again.
Just pray that the MLS doesn't end up like MLB.

We shall see what unfolds in the coming months, but we have major work to do. Our current roster is not as strong as the team that won last year's cup, especially now with the loss of Matan. And as rapidly as the league is moving, if you're standing still, you're backing up.

Yet, some things are different here.

For one, it's Columbus, where beating the odds has become a tradition.

Also, the performances over the past couple of years has created uncommon interest and energy around the Crew, even beyond our borders, as relayed by Matt Doyle's article, shared above. That's the kind of stuff that can trick up the revenue equation nicely.

And finally, at least for now, we have Nancy. If we hope to consistently knock down the bigs, we have the ultimate slingshot. Any concessions invested on retaining Mr. Nancy will be the most efficient, effective money we can spend. But we need players too right now. Nancy may walk on water in my book, but he's gonna need a few more rocks.

    Here's hoping.

That STL page is, I think, just referring to how Homegrowns count - or don't - against the roster budget, not their status as Homegrowns. You can pay a Homegrown player more than what is normally allowed for Supplemental roster players, and still tuck them into Supplemental roster spots. And those spots, of course, are roster budget exempt. But once their compensation goes higher than that, they must be on the Senior roster, where their salary counts against the salary budget. That's how I read it.

I will continue to say this until I’m blue in the face. It’s not how much money you spend, it’s how you spend it. We were the best TEAM in the league the last 15 months or so. I’m firmly of the opinion if we continue to spend the way we’ve spent the last few seasons then we will be fine.

So ... to take the MLB analogy further ...

We are going to be like the Cleveland Guardians.

Unless Ownership sees more profit potential in real estate development ... then we will go the way of the St. Louis Cardinals.

I’m firm in my opinion if we keep having open roster spots instead of players who can adequately perform in order to limit minutes for aging starters like Nagbe, Camacho & Ramirez than we will fall behind the curve. We need to get the maximum amount of DPs possible and u22s. We have hit on DPs but not u22s and for a selling club that’s concerning. Crew2 has done an excellent job of providing depth but we haven’t really seen many defenders which is what we need. Sands, Zawadzki & Farsi came through but it doesn’t appear we have any good prospects currently.

Bush is around for another year. He’s a great mentor to Schulte and a steadying influence in the locker room. Sorry, forgot to mention this.
