Note to mods: If you want this in the N/A section please move it there. ====================================== I doubt very many of us could complain about the stars aligning for attendance at the 2002 MLS Cup. 1) The home team is in it 2) Pits the #1 and #2 scorers in the league against each other 3) LA has two very well known American players in Lalas and Cobi 4) MLS can market the hell out of the young american striker vs the young hispanic striker 5) The local hispanic population has never supported the Revolution but the one team they have made an effort to come out and see has been LA 6) The local media will give the game a relatively fair shake (equal mix of positive along with bashing) 7) The Patriots have a bye next week and will not be playing For now, I am placing my disappointment threshold at not hitting 30,000 and the happy threshold at breaking 40,000. With the hope of the hispanic support to help bump the crowd, MLS is going to need good weather as most of them will most likely be walk up fans. I have not heard any number for presales yet (outside of pure rumors). If anyone has them, please catalouge them in this thread. As for people concerned about the look of the field I have bad news. The Pats have not played at home for 20 days and yet the Pats symbold and gridiron marks could still be seen. The Pats play at home tomorrow when a fresh bright coat of paint will go down so I am warning every one early to set your expectations low for hoping to see non gridiron marks. Andy
it looks like they have nearly sold out the seats they have released. i cant get 3 seats together in the stadium. i wonder how many they planned to open and if they will open more.
Attendance: MLS Cup Now that we know the 2 teams going to be involved thought I would start the thread..let the speculation, pathetics and perdictions fly... I'm predicting that 33,000 will make it out to Gillette stadium for the final.
The early prediction is partly cloudy with a high of 61 degrees. http://www.weather.com/outlook/sports/local/USMA0146?whatprefs=
You forgot the best "marketing" angle of them all.....Boston vs. LA. Appeal to the casual Boston's sports' fans hate of LA If Anschutz and/or Kraft are smart....they'd open upper deck, price tix at $10, buy 20,000-25,000, and distribute for free.....this is a once-in-a-decade marketing opportunity for the Revs, to win back some fans, and hook some (gets folks pumped for season tix). Spend the money...after 250million in losses, what's another 200-250k? g You got a national broadcast in a showcase game..you want 35k or 55k-60k? Andy is right that this is a mega-lucky alignment for Revs....just don't blow it...win and win EXCITING (not boreball)
Scared About MLS CUP attendance...(R) Im kind of scared of a low attendance at gillete stadium for the final, just look at the attendance @ NE during the playoffs: 9216 11387 6954 6306 those numbers are kind of scary.. i was hoping for something in upper 30 k's to 40 k.. but that might be a long shot with those kind of numbers **cant wait till LA gets next CUP year, then i GUARANTEE you a good crowd and atmosphere**
Here's another promo thought: Put together a series of commercials (quickly!) with notable Boston sports personalities encouraging folks to go to the game.....Nomar loves soccer and would likely do it....go find 2 players from the Bruins/Celtics (don't they have a foreign dude or 2?)/Pats (surely Kraft can TELL someone to do it!).. In other words, pour it on...Revs may not get another promo opportunity like this for another 10-20 yrs. (championship game in home stadium). In fact, the league could go under before they get another shot (so do all you can this time...go for it-g)
I predict 27,500. 40,000 would be great. I support the idea of giving away all unsold tickets for this game on ABC.
I think they'll easily have a nice crowd for this game. After all it is the final and they have been marketing the game for a long time. I do agree about NE attendance in the playoffs. One word: Pathetic.
Oh thee of little faith, NE's playoff games have been on week nights. Thats why the numbers are so low.
What were the attendence for the final four regular season games at the Big Razor in Foxboro? It would be an intersting comparison.
Re: Scared About MLS CUP attendance...(R) You do realize that the crowd this year will almost certainly be larger than the 27-30K they'll squeeze into LA's new stadium next year? As well as the 21K last year in Columbus? Would you still consider MLS Cup 2002 attendance "weak" if it's the largest Cup crowd in a 3-year span? As for atmosphere, the atmosphere has better in these last 4 playoff games than at any other point this year (except possibly the US-Holland doubleheader).
You have some/many Boston area sports fans....those who go to a few Red Sox games a year- or one/two (but don't live/die for the sport)....who will "get up" for a big local game/event...and especially in a rivalry situation.. By casual, I mean these folks...and also those who are not "hard core" Red Soxx/Bruins fans who may be dismissive and not too open to going to a Revs game anyway ("communist soccer") I think there is a fairly big opportunity to get thousands to attend (who wouldn't normally go) if (1) you promote the hell out of this (2) make it seem like a big, important event (3) make the tix cheap or free (the group I'm talking about won't pay $40 a tix). I became a fan of the sport in the 70's due to this very thing...(wanted to try something new..)
Scared About MLS CUP attendance...(R) Yeah, and maybe NEXT year, The Galaxy will capture their FIRST MLS Cup title in front of their own crowd.... Go Revs... Nate
As far as I know, they have 30,000 seats available right now. And I cant get 5 seats together. They had to have sold atleast 25k so far. And today, the line was getting enourmous after the game for tiks! SUPAH REVOLUTION!!
