https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2020...-jans-steps-away-duties-pending-investigation Cinci's coach Ron Jans has been accused of using a racial slur in the locker room. Reports are that he was singing along with music being played. Without knowing more details its hard to know what to think about this. He should have known better, but at the same time he's not an American and hasn't been here long (relatively speaking) so he may not be aware of the.issues around certain words. Ignorance is no excuse though.
Have we really reached a point where singing along with a song means we have to avoid words in the song.. particularly since he was reportedly doing it with the players, who most likely chose the song...
Ron Jans is 6 years older than me and from the Netherlands. How the hell would he know the words to any songs chosen by his players?
The top two were: Adrian Heath 23 vote(s) 29.1% Domenec Torrent 11 vote(s) 13.9% Better luck next time!
Also, should certain music not be played in the locker room in the first place? Can seriously be a HR violation. In fact if they try to fire the guy for this and he didn’t choose the music it could be a whole can of worms, legally. Thx, Jay!
That's the first thing that crossed my mind. Apologies for being Captain Obvious here, but if it was music that contained offensive, racist lyrics, why was it playing at all?
The legally side if things depends on whether this is pursued in court, and the court can only award monetary damages. If he leaves, it will be reported as him doing so voluntarily, and any financial compensation won't be reported publicly, probably just a buy out of his contract. Ledesma, a player no longer with the team, tweeted this earlier... My sincere opinion about Ron Jans situation. pic.twitter.com/28xe7DcA9Y— Emmanuel Ledesma (@LedeManu18) February 15, 2020 https://amp.cincinnati.com/amp/4770833002 I'm not sure how this will play out, but my expectation is that it will be portrayed as cultural ignorance and he'll receive some firm of diversity/sensitivity training. Keep in mind, his brashness was part of his appeal. There was a You Tube clip of him flipping someone off floating around prior to FCC hiring him. I don't have the time at the moment to find it.
FC Cincinnati: Ron Jans resigns as head coach https://t.co/pOc5Nj2nlQ via @enquirer— Pat Brennan (@PBrennanENQ) February 18, 2020 Thx, Jay!
These guys hit the point in the team's statement... Themes emerged! Ron Jans has resigned from @fccincinnati. “As Major League Soccer’s investigation unfolded and some themes emerged, Ron offered his resignation and we agreed that it was the best course of action for everyone involved with FC Cincinnati,” club President Jeff Berding pic.twitter.com/JqfJQQ9rkq— SiriusXM FC (@SiriusXMFC) February 18, 2020 But it looks like things are moving quickly... “So anyways, we’ve introduced Gary as our new head coach, we’re told he’s not legally allowed to even speak, he feels like a good fit.” pic.twitter.com/BeGZnh3HrB— Pablo Iglesias Maurer (@MLSist) February 18, 2020
Who could possibly imagine that someone from the Netherlands could have issues with racism that extends beyond singing along to a song...
Ron Jans was just singing along with a song. Didn't know there were so many n-words in Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" but there you have it.
MLSPA takes a giant dump on FCC (and Ron Jans) for putting out the narrative that Jans was under investigation only because of the song lyrics. Statement from MLSPA Executive Director @BobFoose on the ongoing situation with FC Cincinnati: pic.twitter.com/iib3BYfv8l— MLSPA (@MLSPA) February 18, 2020
The way I'm reading it, he wasn't under investigation for that at all. Meaning that didn't happen. Thx, Jay!
