Wait wait wait, so the league is essentially ponying up 300 mil for the land for an MLS stadium, and then is going to turn around and sell it to someone just because they promise to build an MLS stadium? This just keeps getting better and better...
I think that Garber wishes to put this new team in MLS already by 2014 ( at Citi Field ) also for the new contract TV.
Still doesn't address my concerns about RBNY. This is still going to hurt them whether RBNY admits it or not.
Maybe RBNY needs to a do a better job.....as in stop alienating their own STH and SG's. RBNY has the greatest potential to be THE TEAM that everyone wants to be, but the FO fails in almost every aspect.
The New York metro area market is huge. The Red Bulls don't really need to draw fans from central Jersey to Long Island to fill seats. If they were a well-run organization, they'd have no problem selling out based on drawing fans from New Jersey, with a smattering of New York residents.
I agree they need to be doing a better job. But it just seems counter-productive to me for the league to be placing another even bigger problem in RBNY's way after they've invested over $200 million into the team and the league.
Actually, Queens Park has a nice ring to it. adding the Rangers would be too copycat....someone has to come up with something else, but a good basis is there.
This thread is why none of us are MLS executives. It's a serious logical error to believe that NYRB's are about to become the next Chivas USA. Two problems with that (1) The NY2 team and NYRB will have very little overlap for fans. Most of the fans of NYRB's reside in NJ, these teams aren't sharing stadiums so there is no way they will be like CUSA and LAG (2) For as bad as NYRB's marketing is it pales in comparison to Chivas USA. Chivas was just a bad brand decision from the beginning, it's a name that only markets itself to spanish speakers who don't dislike the original Chivas. They still draw over 10k fans with all of these problems. Teams like New England and DC need new stadiums yes, but they are part of the ownership group that is paying for this NY2 stadium, if they had serious problems with Don's strategy this wouldn't be happening. NY is an important market that can easily support two teams. NYRB's will probably see a spike in attendance from have a true local rival and the increased media attention a second team will bring. And finally, this NY2 franchise wouldn't be happening if the demand wasn't their from ownership groups in NY. It is very likely that the MLS already has multiple groups lined up and willing to pay this expansion fee. We have no idea what the terms of their agreements could be. The new franchise might have to chip in for the stadium it's self too. The league is not putting itself in a precarious financial situation because they've examined all the angles to this, we as fans have not. Patience, this is a very good thing for MLS.
So DC doesn't play in a dump? Dick's isn't out in a field (I've been there and go there regularly)? FCD isn't an hour north of downtown (I've been there and went there regularly)? The Cosmos DO exist? (They don't, at least not as an MLS team. They exist in MLS as much as Orlando City or San Antonio or Tampa exist in MLS). The league ISN'T offering more help to this team than they've offered to any other franchise, real or potential? I'd say those are all pretty much facts.
We should get some alternative names to the Cosmos going, just in case: - New York Collapse (after all, we should get something tangible out of the 2008 debacle, right?) - New York Shenanigans (see above) - New York Scam (my personal favorite....the Scam) - NYPD Blue (c'mon every season tv comes out with New York + Cops show...lets use it to our advantage) - New York Trumps (if he puts in money...the stadium becomes The Donald) - New York Metros (take that, Red Bulls) - New York Fo Shizzle (there has to be a snoop combo that works, somehow, open to suggestions) - New York Ims (something combos with immigrants...that's New York's pride and joy issue) - New York Becks (Beckham, Beck's beer as sponsor, the musician Beck as a limited partner) - New York Apples - New York Media Whores (who can argue with that one?) - New York Warmth (positive branding for the city PLUS I believe Mr. Warmth when he says he is a big-time insider for MLS- he's prolly involved somehow) - the CBGBs (turn this club into the American equivalent to St. Pauli in Germany or the Oakland Raiders- soccer with an edge). Maybe also Queens Reich (musical pun) - New York Flight Delay would resonate, but probably rejected as too negative. open to suggestions, obviously
Misleading thread title "They (MLS execs) acknowledge the deal is far from done, and it might be years before a MLS team plays its first home game in north-central Queens" Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/more-sports/queens-300-million-soccer-stadium-house-mls-franchise-article-1.1136400#ixzz23dpSs9d3
Yes it does have a nice ring to it, but for marketing purposes you want New York in the team name. A lot of people don't even know Queens is a borough. It works for Chelsea and Arsenal because they are very old established clubs.
QPH (Queens Park Hipsters). Their color scheme will be black-white with black rimmed glasses on the crest
