D.C. United at San Jose Adu factor bumps up SJ to 13,250 Dallas at Columbus Dallas is not a big draw and Columbus is struggling 15,100 Los Angeles at New England This is an interesting matchup, but NE has limited response 15,750 MetroStars at Chicago Could be a great game. 14,500 Colorado at Kansas City Break the record night 30,000
What'll also affect the SJ-DC attendance numbers is whether or not there's a Game 5 for the Sharks-Avalanche NHL playoff series, which would be played about a mile or so away from Spartan Stadium, would be on national over-air broadcast TV and would be played at about the same time (12 noon PT) as the Earthquakes-United game (1pm PT). So now there's two reasons for me to hope for a Sharks sweep in the series (I'm a Sharks fan, and no Game 5 should help Spartan's numbers that day)... no offense, Avalanche fans. -G
D.C. United at San Jose Freddy Adu may bump up the attendance but only to the tune of 11,500. It's still San Jose after all. Dallas at Columbus CLB is sucking it up this year and Dallas, even with two wins, ain't that big o' deal. 13,000. Los Angeles at New England NE will hold steady at 17,000. MetroStars at Chicago Metros come in as best team in MLS but the crowd in Chicago is only at 12,000. Colorado at Kansas City Since it's Break the Record Night I think they'll pull in 28,000. Average: 16,300

A store called Price Chopper gives away free upper deck seats if you buy a six-pack of soda or a bag of chips. If you want to buy extra tix, they are $5. Plus you get a 'Zard Card - good for discounts throughout the (cough) metro area. The Wiz did this last year & drew a pretty big crowd. IMO, this is a pretty damn good idea for those teams that play in huge football stadiums.
at Kansas City 25,500 at CHICAGO 17,500 at San Jose 16,000 at Columbus 15,000 at New England 14,000 Average 17,6000
D.C. United at San Jose - 19,024 Dallas at Columbus - 13, 987 Los Angeles at New England - 19,221 MetroStars at Chicago - 10,453 Colorado at Kansas City - 19,218 Quango
The Avalanche defeated the Sharks in overtime of Game 4 today 1-0. Now that there will be a Game 5 in that series played a mile away from Spartan Stadium (and broadcast live on ABC) at about the same time as the Earthquakes-United game, we can pretty much kiss that outside shot at a 20k Spartan crowd goodbye. My guess now would be about 17k-18k for the 1pm game on espn2 (it would've been more if the game was at 7pm PT, and would undoubtedly have been at about 20k if the game was at 7pm PT and there was no competing Sharks playoff game that could potentially send the Sharks to its first-ever Western Conference Finals played at the same time). -G
D.C. United at San Jose - 17.2 Dallas at Columbus - 13.1 Los Angeles at New England - 14.3 MetroStars at Chicago - 13.2 Colorado at Kansas City - 29.6 average: 17.48
Ok, here it goes. at Kansas City 24,000 at CHICAGO 10,500 at San Jose 17,000 at Columbus 14,000 at New England 10,000
I have a hard time believing that there are THOUSANDS of Earthquake fans who just have to go to the Sharks game instead. Please.
Though I never said THOUSANDS, there are quite a few Earthquakes fans that are also Sharks fans, including Sharks season-ticket holders who usually skip some Sharks games to attend Earthquakes games instead. But this is no mere Sharks game, but a Sharks second-round playoff home game that, if they win, will send them to the third-round for the first time ever... particularly poignant, considering that the team was picked to finish dead last by almost everyone in the beginning of the season (and didn't have a very good October, to boot). On top of that, there are the casual local sports fans (the ones who didn't sleep overnight in line just to get playoff tickets) who will be flocking to the local bars and resaurants just to watch the Sharks game on the big screens (the local news channels have been showing these bars and restaurants lately) - it also helps the Sharks that while the HP Pavilion and Spartan Stadium are only a mile or two away from each other, they are in completely different neighborhoods, with the former almost smack dab in the middle of downtown and the latter "out in the boonies" as far as SJ neighborhoods go - and take a guess where all the bars and restaurants are... The Sharks are definitely a Cinderalla-story for a team the city had already loved anyway. Trust me, most casual San Jose (and Bay Area in general) sports fans' eyes and ears will be focused squarely on the HP Pavilion at San José, whether in person or by TV, radio or internet - for many of the casual fans, it'll definitely overtake any curiosity they've had for "this Adu kid". So yes, the Quakes likely would've gotten about 20k for this game had the game started at 7pm PT and there was no competing Sharks home playoff game at the same time. But now they won't. -G
I was travelling this week and couldn't make a prediction before the deadline. However, I will post ranking for this week once actual numbers are in.
I know it's too late but I"m going to predict anyway: CO @ KC: 25,000 DC @ SJ: 16,000 DAL @ CLB: 16,000 LA @ NE: 15,000 NY @ CHI: 15,000
