We already have New York City, they just use the one city- NYCFC. BTW: The name issue got a quick discussion in today's Guardian Football weekly extra Podcast, good quick British perspective on American sports naming.
True, but NYC is often just referred to as New York and Kansas City and Oklahoma City aren't referred to as Kansas and Oklahoma. Except by English MLS players and coaches, who all seem to think "City" is part of Sporting Kansas City's club name and not part of the city name.
As a person who lives in a suburb of New York City, I hate that. Neither the radio market name ("New York") nor the mailing city name ("New York, NY") have "City" in them. I'm not criticizing you. I'm criticizing the Postal Service and any other official organization that excludes "City." I wonder if NYCFC would have called themselves "New York Football Club" (NYFC) if the Red Bulls didn't exist.
New York Metros would be a great name for the Red Bulls as they are based in the New York metropolitan area.
I've not heard NYC referred to as "New York" only "New York City" and NYCFC (which I hate). The Red Bulls are referred to as New York except on the scoreboard at Yankee Stadium.
New York Metro Reds. Acknowledges both parts of their heritage. Too easy though, so it'll never happen.
Remember that the Wizards play their games in Kansas City, Kansas... They missed the ball on Kansas City, Kansas City FC
I've long held that En-Why-Sea-Eff-See will be the official shortener for the team that plays in the Bronx.
I've actually liked Metropolitan FC, or Metropolitan NY for over 20 years now. Either one can be shortened to Metros.
