From yesterday's The Washington Post: Real Madrid Close To Deal With MLS Thursday, April 22, 2004; Page D02 http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A32294-2004Apr21.html "Real Madrid, the most successful team in European soccer history, has tentatively agreed to play a squad of MLS players in the league's All-Star Game at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass., this summer, sources familiar with the negotiations said yesterday..."
hopefully. there's still 1 open ticket date out there. of the 5..... 1. 5/19 revs v sporting 2. 6/2 us v hon 3. 9/4 us wcq 4. playoff date 1 5. ? i don't really see a schedule on the center circle portion of the site. they really should have one with any "special games" plugged in there with the event ticket # we should be using.
MLS all-stars vs Chivas....interested, but not that interested. Now, this I am VERY interested in. Have to agree that this better be part of the season ticket package!
So, John Harkes on MLS Wrap on FSW said this was a go, but no official announcement anywhere. Anyone know anything about it?
So how much are we thinking the cheapest tickets will be? I see the capacity at 68,000. How many Real Madrid supporters live in New England? I'll bet thousands will come from New York, maybe some from Miami (site of the only U.S.-based supporters club). I will be at the L.A. game, and I will try to fly to the one in Foxboro.
yea, they are probably working out the TV deals in the MLS markets to reschedule the games back a week. But if FSW is reporting it, especially on an MLS show, it's going to happen.
The Fort better be MLS All-Stars rooting territory (with several Revs to root for as well).. Hope Beckham shows up.. so many different things to go after him for (That ridiculous haircut, the Rebecca Loos et all thing.... and one of the worst sins to a loyal new englander.. namin his kid after a part of NEW YAWK CITY!
So is it going to be the 31st or the 24th? The rescheduling of games could cause a problem if they are going to move the games that were originally set for the 31st up a week (home to San Jose, plus 4 other games league-wide). Even though stadium availability might be less of a problem than in September, it's still a headache from the logistical point of view. Re-arranging flights and hotels for every away team, practice schedules and venues, etc. is not an easy task. Frank D in the Globe is still talking about it being on the 24th. Personally, for selfish reasons alone, I hope this gets moved to the 31st. 6 months ago my wife got tickets for the Lion King on the 24th. I'm just worried that people will start calling me "Simba" if I miss this game! Tom
It's the 31st from what I've been hearing. The Spanish league doesn't end until the end of May, and generally players get a month off, IIRC. Would be difficult to come off that with no practice and play a game immediately.
Yea, it will be the 31st, and that (I'm led to believe) is holding up the official announcement from the league and Real Madrid. But if the source from the Washington Post is correct, we should be hearing an announcement within this week.
"Hope Beckham shows up..." Well, he has fifty million reasons to now: GILLETTE TO SIGN DAVID BECKHAM TO PROMO DEAL: Multi-Year Contract With Soccer Star Estimated at $50 Million http://www.adage.com/news.cms?newsId=40371 Towards the bottom: "Ironically, this country's struggling professional soccer league, Major League Soccer, is on the verge of a deal that would bring Mr. Beckham and Real Madrid to Gillette Stadium outside of Boston to play an MLS All-Star team in a friendly exhibition. The Gillette spokeswoman declined to comment, but executives close to the deal said the game is expected to be announced next week and will be played in late July, likely on a Saturday, and be televised on Walt Disney Co.'s ABC."
Problem is, depending on the race for the presidency of Real Madrid, Beckham could be off to Chelsea by the time they get here. Also, Real might be missing some of their stars, depending on how far various countries go in Euro04... the final's the 4th of July, and if they want a month off..
Is it really fair to describe MLS as "struggling?" Even the most negative people, coughTreckerCowlescough, would agree that the league is much better off than even a couple of years ago. And things will certainly get better with new stadiums coming up in Dallas, Chicago, and one of these days, Mutt-ville. It's also just about certain that at least 2 new teams will be with us within 2 years. Things are looking up. I won't even speculate what will happen once Freddy Adu is regarded as a regular player and not a novelty anymore. Tom
It's "struggling" because the last memory most soccer-stupid writers have is "Didn't they get rid of those two Florida teams?"
I am just throwing this out there FYI... Country music singer, Toby Keith, (he's the one who had that war of words last year with the Dixie Chicks & Peter Jennings), is negotiating to kick off his next tour at Gillette Stadium. It might consist of as many as 7 or 8 acts...and he's negotiating for the use of the stadium for the "end of July". One possible date I have heard is the 24th. Say what you will about country music, (and I know the use of the term "yeehaw" is probably one of your favorites), but, this show will sell 50,000+, (actual numbers depending on the stage configuration). BTW, George Strait sold out the old 'boro a few years ago, and the brown patch it created over the south goal was there almost all summer. I would imagine MLS would want to use the field before that happens, especially when we're talkin' late July, after we are a good 4 weeks into a nice drought. Bob Kraft must be drooling over two sellouts in a week. (and is Liverpool still coming in July too??) Again, I don't know where MLS & Real Madrid are in their negotiations, but I just thought I'd add that piece of news that's coming from people in Toby's camp.
Hm, bizarre. You've got to wonder why they wouldn't want to hold such an event in a larger facility closer to the intended fan base. Say here: Oh, wait, I see...there's already a NASCAR double header scheduled for the 24th.
Heh. Sorry, couldn't resist. Still, if I was going to put on a country show, I'd do it somewhere farther north. Are there that many country fans in Rhode Island?
Sorry, just a bit sensitive. Just FYI, in the latest ratings released this week, Country in the Boston Metro scored higher 12+ ratings than WZLX, Mix, WROR, WBOS, WAAF, and Star. In fact, Country is the #1 format, (18+), during several dayparts on weekends too. In the Providence market, although I do not have the numbers, I believe Country is a consistant Top 5. When Vince Gill came through town with his wife, Amy Grant, last December, he said that his New England shows, sold faster than any other venue in the USA. I know, hard to believe...but that blonde next to you at that stop light probably has a copy of the Dixie Chicks, Shania, and Tim McGraw stuck in her visor CD holder. So the market is there, and has proven it with these sell-outs in the past 12 months alone: The Dixie Chicks, Tim McGraw & Shania Twain at the FleetCenter, Alan Jackson, and Kenny Chesney at the Tweeter Center. Plus, another sell-out just last night at the Centrum with Kenny Chesney. Anyway...I want news on the MLS-Real Madrid match!!
