Major League Soccer is closing in on a final deal with state and city officials for a $300 million, 25,000-seat, state-of-the-art soccer-stadium complex in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, The Post has learned. The proposed facility, construction of which could begin early next year, would be home to a yet-to-be-named new franchise. The stadium would be located next to the Mets’ Citi Field and the Arthur Ashe tennis stadium, and would include nine high-quality soccer fields available for community and minor-league use, sources said. I wonder if they will go further into this at the international friendly wed night - its at Citi Field
Personally, I doubt it will be apart of the friendly. It doesn't involve MLS. And the stadium won't involve the Wilpons (it appears). Regardless, USA-Mexico is on the day and I will be at Jack Demsey's.
I hope this is realistic man - the league would then be at 19 teams for two straight years - they could alternate the schedule this year to next year - and if a team went to a rival twice -that rival comes to them twice next year and then back to home and away possibly for 2014 Its ambitious though - i hope they can make it happen Not sure how long the Cosmos and NASL have a deal in store for - i heard it was short term but just not sure what the plans are. If this stadium does get approved and started in 2013 - maybe man - just maybe - however i do expect resistance - as does Francisco Moya the local politician
Not really... Energy Drink Arena was built in 200+ range. Add the NYC costs of land to that and your are in the ballpark.
But even if for April 2014 this stadium will be not ready, I think that a new NYC team can play some months or even 1 year at Citi Field.
I think that's a little overly pessimistic. No public money is involved, no apparent NIMBY issues and enthusiastic government support, only a concerted effort by an affected interest group will stall this. Perhaps that could be the Mets, but I doubt they'll consider it worth their time in the end. I could be wrong. Of course there's also the issue of environmental impact and other issues, but this is already a developed area, so that shouldn't be as much of an issue as it was in Harrison. Plus they had to deal with the sale and the redesign. 2014 is very possible if the approval goes through in November.
I'm just saying that 2014 is not impossible and 2018 is overly pessimistic. If it's approved, then 2016 is a realistic date if there are serious complications, but I don't think this particular situation warrants a 5 year delay.
Interestingly, for the first time the Flushing Meadows stadium concept has been reported on on the local political blogs. So the story is out to the other local pols and the community. Let the games begin!
Great news indeed.... AND ABOUT DAMN TIME!!! THE WHEELS ARE NOW IN MOTION THERE IS NO STOPPING THIS... INSULTING DRINK WILL BE EVEN LESS RELEVANT THAN THEY ARE NOW...
