just for fun and since it's the off-season. By 2014, where will MLS be in term of the major sports in the US and where will MLS be in term of major soccer leagues in the world? My prediction: MLS will be the fourth major leagues in the U.S. by 2014 behind the NBA, NFL, MLB and will be the fifth major soccer league in the world behind EPL, La Liga, Series A and Bundesliga. That is quite an accomplishment if it came true. IT also means that MLS will have surpass the Mexican league 10 years from now.
Well, it could be both, couldn't it? Just like all the other big teams in the world right now who all live in a huge deficit and can barely pay their bills? 16-18 teams. 6-9th best league in the world. On better financial footing than hockey. BigSoccer posters finally coming together to purchase expansion team and put it in Seattle.
Ahhhh, off-season dreaming. Let's see. . . I think 4th behind the big three is very doable. In 2014 we'll have: 1 World Cup in our cabinet (mwah ha ha) 16 Teams (10 of which have their own stadium) on one table NO relegation-yet- because their is still too large of a gulf between some of the A-league teams and the MLS (although the MLS says it could happen in the near future). BS posters are still bitching about it. Still not a lot of respect from the world And people are questioning whether or not it's bad for the league that the Galaxy has won the last 10 MLS cups
Really quickly, as a side question: If the MLS become on par with the Mexican league, and maybe has two teams from Canada. . . Do you think that North and Central America CONCACAF, or whatever, may have their own Copa Libertadores tournament (whatever it wants to be called), and then South America with continue on with the Copa?
Nah, Mexican league teams are joining Copa Libertadores (2 teams I believe) and about 6-7 years from now, MLS will do the same. CONCACAF can work out a deal with the South American Federation to let it happen. Right now, CONCACAF version of Copa Libertadores is not very prestigious or draw much of a crowd. Basically, there is not a lot of tradition in it. Copa Libertadores will be the Champions League for the Americas in the future. Right now it is the Champions Leagues for South American leagues and Mexico. If MLS roster increase, it will do the same as Mexico league and try to get in and compete against the might of Brazil, Argentina, Mexico...etc.
Alright, 10 years from now: 1.Fourth major league in the US 2.One of the top 15 soccer leagues in the world 3.An 18-team league; almost all of them playing in soccer-specific stadiums 4.Minnimum salary at $50,000 per year; Max salary at $1.5 million 5.MLS teams participating in Copa Libertadores 6.no relegation or promotion, single-table with the top 8 teams advancing to the playoffs
i agree with most of what is said, but i disagree on the single table and the relegation. America doesn't have the same club background that europe and american sports won't allow it we will have 2 conferences the playoffs will stay the same just with more teams left out and the "salary cap" will still be there, America's league will be more exciting than others but teams won't necessarially dominate like foreign teams due to the cap, but that is what will keep average joe coming back next year and Big Soccer posters still wont get why we don't have a single table, and relegation. And MLS front office will know better.
MLS in 2014: 1. Freddy Adu best player in the league at the ripe old age of 25. 2. 16 Teams in League -All with SSS or SSS being built. DCU gets sick of waiting for DC gov to decide whether or not to bring in Baseball and finally pushed through a stadium deal in Arlington. 3. MLS Tickets get kind of expensive. (Grumpy old man voice - I remember the days when you could get good seats for about $15 bucks.") 4. Average attendance a solid 25,000. 5. MLS gets regular coverage on Sports Center and most major media outlets. 6. Fans complain that there are too many players in it for the money instead of for the love of the game and wish for the golden age of MLS in the late 90's. 7. Increase in the number of high-qaulity international players on in the league. 8. MLS no longer has single entity structure. 9. FIFA mandates use of one-peice uniforms. 10. Most team have rerve squads and soccer academies.
I feel guilty even participating in these threads, but: 20-24 teams Every team either in a SSS or building one. Home to pretty much all US Nats, U-23's, etc. Home to all qualified Nats from CONCACAF, most from Oceania, East Asia. No relegation; fans have finally accepted this fact, and embraced their league's differences. 6-8 playoff teams. $15-20 million salary cap, minimum salary around $300,000 for a starter. Highly competitive in the Copa Libertadores, Champions Cup resembles UEFA Cup. Landon Donovan, still an Earthquake at 32, but nobody whines about how he needs to leave anymore. Freddy Adu, 27, rumored to be returning from Juventus when his contract expires. A-league is a joint US-Canadian league, with the Canadian teams a good deal stronger.
I really think our dreams can differ from moderate success to enormous success, and it will all basically depend on how well we do in WC, Olympics, new SSS built, but particularly on how well SUM does as a business, which i think it is something that gets too often overlooked.... Now if you want to see MY crazy ideas in a very long post on this subject, it's right here https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=90809
visions of 2014 1) 18 teams - top 10 league in the world. 2) USMNT u-23's in the league. Older veterans others in Europe 3) 5th major sport, but closing in on hockey with a national TV game of the week on Saturday nights (ABC). Radio braodcasts in English & Spanish. 4) USMNT - 4th in the world 5) Attendance - 18,000 average 6) WUSA incorproated into the league as affiliates with the Men's teams . Each club has a reserve & youth academy. 7) Soccer specific stadiums - 80% of the league 8) Salary cap per team is $7,500,000 9) Single entity still around. 10) Closer affiliataion with A-league & PDL teams. 11) Participate in Copa Libertadores. 12) Freddy Adu - leading scorer for defending 2013 EPL Champion Arsenal
10 years from now..... 1. 19 years old soccer god so and so from Germany considers a move to MLS to further his career. 2. Landon Donovan, 31, considers retiring and moving from MLS to serie A to finish his career. 3. Soccer pundits from ESPN calling national team head coach Bob Bradley to resign after he drew an easy game against Mexico. 4. Foxsportsworld ridicule requests from fans to cover any soccer at all. They claim it's too "mainstream." They added Chinese gridiron to their schedule. 5. Every team in MLS has state of the art SSS. Columbus is looking for a new stadium after fans chanting "Get me out of this hell hole" during games.
Ty Keogh, the "Voice of American Soccer", retires and is honored at a small ceromony in the White House.
1. 20 team league, 4 divisions with an unbalanced 36 game schedule. Top 8 teams make the play offs. Schedual must remain unbalanced or play offs become a joke and without playoffs MLS is a joke. 2. All teams that need them have SSS, average attendance tops 25,000 3. Average ticket price over $35 (ignore inflation for a moment). 4. National TV contract that pays MLS, each team also has local TV deal. 5. Average revenue per team tops $40 million a year. Salary cap raised to $20 million and owners get to make a profit. 6. Max salary raised to $3 million, minimum raised to 100,000. Each team can have one "franchise player who can make any amount over $3 million, but still only counts as $3 million on there cap. Each team must pay what their franchise player earns over the cap themselves. Most importantly: 7. For every top dollar earning, talented American player who goes on to Europe, we get a player of equal value in return. In essence, MLS stops being a farm league.
Nice topic. Well, I think the league will drastically improve in 10 years: 1- All 20 teams with SSS. 2- Must games will be sold out 3- A lot of tickets demands 4- European leagues will recognize our league as a top 10 in the world, only Argentina and Brazil will have better leagues in the American Continent. 5- Landon Donovan will be playing his last two years. He will retire in 2016 officially. 6- Carlos el Pibe Valderrama will be like 91 years old. 7- The league will change its format and two separate tournaments will be play like in Mexico. 8- Many Europeans will have their training camps in USA MLS SSS. 9- USA will win their first World Cup and world Club Cup. 10- Soccer will be the fourth right after Baseball, Football and Basketball
If you're going to dream, you may as well have good dreams. MLS has 20 teams 2013 Liberators Cup Champions are the Philadelphia Foxhounds, who play to regular crowds of 50-60k at the Linc. They are set to play Champions League winners Chelsea in the first annual Trans-Atlantic Cup. DC United is still in RFK, which is still a dump, but Freddy Adu has been packing them in, as the team has a 72-match sellout string, the longest in league history. Each team is individually owned, but the league has tight revenue-sharing rules and a hard salary cap. The league has a new TV Contract with the FOX network, who were recently outbid on their NFL deal by NBC. They show live matches every week on Saturdays and Sundays. The revenue from this deal has caused the salary cap to increase to 30million/team, and has sparked a flurry of transfers into the league. Wayne Rooney has agreed to a contract with the Metrostars. His leg is shattered in his first game by D.C.'s aging hitman, Dema Kovalenko. MLS has annexed the A-league and USL, but rather than using the European pro/rel system, they have set up the leagues as minor league affiliates, a-la MLB. These teams function as reserve teams for the MLS franchises. The MLS draft is still around, but news of it is buried in the back of the paper, since few of the high school age players drafted will be playing with the big teams for years. 16 year old Honduran wunderkind Julio C. Contreras has signed with the Dallas Burn organization, and is expected to play the upcoming season for their A-League affiliate, the San Antonio Defenders. They think he may be good enough to crack the MLS roster by the end of the season.
Hopefully 10 years from now we won't be worrying ourselves about the state of the league 10 years from then!!
20 teams. Each team has a reserve side. The only teams playing in American Football stadiums will be owned by the stadium owners, al la New England. Each team is profitable. League still owns all contracts, with a strict salary cap. However, this is what keeps smaller market teams profitable. 8 teams make the playoffs. No more overtime.
20 teams (New England, New York, Rochester, New Jersey, Philly, DC, Chicago, St. Louis, Columbus, Cleveland, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Salt Lake City, Colorado, LA, Kansas City, San Jose, Seattle) Everybody showing a profit Every team has a youth academy One of the top 8 leagues in the world Saturday Night Soccer on ABC Metrostars are still 60 to 90 days away from announcing a stadium deal
