Had to bring this thread back because I've gotten some great song recommendations from your posts. Here are two mixes I recently made for my sister representing the "Then & Now" of my CD collection.

    4. Always Something There To Remind Me -- Naked Eyes

    14. You Spin Me Round -- Dead or Alive
    15. Don't You Forget About Me -- Simple Minds
    16. Relax -- Frankie Goes To Hollywood
    17. Too Shy -- Kajagoogoo
    18. Forever Young -- Alphaville

    Now:

Dave - search for the import of "Universal" by OMD, it came out in '98 and it was the best stuff he/they did since like 1983, before they became a pop band. Or try Karl Bartos's project called Electric Music, his second Electric Music album will be more to your liking. You would also probably enjoy The Other Two's "SuperHighways" which was 100 times better than thier debut album but again it's only on import. Try downloading the song "This is the Day" by Nueroctive and tell me what you think. Coming out soon is Computergirl, which is a girl and a synthesizer but she's awesome, you'll like her quite a bit. Going back a ways...do you own "Soul Mining" by The The?

    Ted,

I've heard "Universal." To be honest, I didn't really like it all that much -- thought "Walking on the Milky Way" and the title track were OK but other than that it didn't do much for me.

There's a great CD single out there that is almost impossible to find -- "Pandora's Box" by OMD. It has two versions of "Pandora's Box," as well as "Sugar Tax" and "All She Wants Is Everything." A small but beautiful and perfect collection.

Most of the other stuff you mentioned here is new to me but I will check it out.

Incidentally if you go to AnythingBox.com you can both 1) download a remastered album for free and 2) if you click on "interact" and then the letter "c" under "Vent Contact" you can get a free remix of "Conscious" which is pretty good.

Dave, how could you not like some of Universal? "Very CLose to Far Away" was one of the 5 best OMD songs of all time.

I have the Pandora's box single, I used to think the song Sugar Tax was better than anything on the album. Of course, "Was it something I said" is a synth pop classic.

I am not too sure how I feel about Anything Box these days. I liked them a lot in highschool.

Well, I only heard "Universal" once and it was many years ago... It didn't make much of an impression, what can I say.

Anything Box is one of those bands I would have expected not to like after their first album. I thought "Hope" was pretty uneven. But I was really impressed with "Elektrodelica" and "The Universe is Expanding" -- they kept their "thing" but managed to do some pretty original and distinctive stuff.

We need to start the dance/trance thread up again.

Dave, some albums, like Universal need more than a few listens before it hits you.

I thought OMD's guitar tracks were better than thier synth stuff.

    how about an OMD mix:

    1) 88 seconds in greensboro
    2) native daughters of the golden west
    3) of all the things we made
    4) the new stone age
    5) was it something i said?
    6) very close to far away
    7) almost
    8) christine
    9) never turn away
