This is also on the official website, where they have Opta as data provider. https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/players/goal_assist?se=274 2004-05 has for example: Lampard 18, Henry 14, Bergkamp 12. A few years ago (2018) I researched who had the most 10+ assists seasons: Giggs and Fabregas were the ones with five. Beckham, Bergkamp, Cantona and Lampard had four. Henry, De Bruyne and Silva had two by then. Giggs and Bergkamp had also several seasons with 9 assists, and Gerrard had two with 9 on top of the one with 10 assists. I also looked at who finished most often in the top three: Bergkamp led the way with six, followed by Fabregas on five, Beckham and Lampard on four. Giggs had three. Worth pointing out again that this does not differentiate between open play and set piece assists, or of course crosses from the wing (at a %15-20 accuracy or so; great ones like Robben, Ribery or Beckham have 30+% cross accuracy). Nor does it factor in that during Thierry Henry his pomp the fouls per game was a lot higher (as well as tackles and other characteristics). Noteworthy are the ('rare') players who become top scorer and top assister in the same season: for ex. Andy Cole, Hasselbaink. And others who topped both charts in different seasons: for ex. Thierry Henry and Van Persie. For the period above: 34 - Between Aug 2001 & May 2006, Danny Murphy assisted 34 PL goals; only Henry 53, Giggs 49, Bergkamp 41 & Lampard 37 had more. Great. Thank you. I hadn’t realised they went that far back. I’m guessing there aren’t things like that for other leagues?
Not sure whether that is complete for older seasons. If I compare it with soccer-europe or what OPTA has provided for certain players there are differences. For newer seasons they have Statsbomb as help so that is fine.
Although there are differences with OPTA, and @PDG1978 and I noticed a few clear errors in the data, it does roughly indicate here that someone like Lampard relied for ~30% on set pieces for assists, while for e.g. Scholes, Bergkamp and Cantona that is barely the case (the source says 0 for 2005-06 but that's wrong). https://www.soccermetrics.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/EPL-20-Book.pdf Also confirmed by this, that tracks assists in an ice hockey manner. https://web.archive.org/web/20160318132537/http://www.premiersoccerstats.com/Records.cfm?DOrderby=OPAss&DYearby=All Seasons From the 2006-07 season onward the Premier League website is pretty detailed.
Not that it will register among the usual suspects (@Peru FC , @Dearman etc.), but after some research I found out that Brad Friedel and Van der Sar are the only goalkeepers since 1992 to have the most clean sheets in a season, and the most saves in a season. Friedel made the PFA team of the year, the other typically did not. https://www.soccermetrics.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/EPL-20-Book.pdf https://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news-archive-1/opta-index-player-of-the-season/ http://www.fulhamfc.com/news/2004/may/20/edwin-scoops-award https://www.beinsports.com/en/uefa-...ampions-league-stats-meanest-defenses/1449402

This was already posted on the first page. The text of the article: Spoiler (Move your mouse to the spoiler area to reveal the content) Show Spoiler Hide Spoiler This week, after a long and successful reign, the holder of one of the most prestigious offices in the developed world stood down. The competition to find his successor began. I suppose he always knew this moment would come and has had months to prepare for it. But Jens Lehmann could still be forgiven a sigh as he sees a new man take his place as Fink Tank Player of the Year. The process to pick a new winner has been more complicated than the Scottish election system. But hopefully you will concur that it has produced a better result. The players picked their player of the year a couple of weeks ago and the crown went to Cristiano Ronaldo. The football writers followed suit and again picked Ronaldo. In both cases, the judges were armed only with a ballot paper and a stubby pencil. We used a multivariate Poisson log-normal model. So there. Dr Ian Graham and Dr Henry Stott used the model to allow us to identify the relationship between goals scored and every kick of the ball made by every player for every club. Once this was done, they simulated the league season over and over again, removing players one by one and replacing them with an average player in his position. This allowed them to see whether a player added or subtracted points from his team compared to an average replacement. The best player this season would be the one who added the most points. But this process did not yield us the player of the year automatically. There were a couple of dilemmas to overcome. The first was whether to take into account periods out with injury or not being played. Robbie Keane, for instance, is a fabulous player, but for one reason or another he spent only 47 per cent of the season’s playing time on the pitch. Should we just ignore this? We decided not to. Players were penalised for being out of the team. Given that Keane has been one of the best players in our rankings every year that the Fink Tank has done these calculations, it is, ahem, interesting that Tottenham Hotspur do not play him all the time. But that is his problem and theirs. We multiplied the points he added in our simulation by the proportion of time on the pitch. The other dilemma was more complicated. Gilberto Silva added more points to Arsenal than any player did to any team in England. Should he be player of the year? The case for him is simply his importance to his team. But the case against him is that he was boosted by the fact that there were fewer great Arsenal players in this campaign for him to share the points with. A Manchester United player might have been better but had to split his contribution with four of five other stars. So we hit on another way of calculating the player of the year. We looked at how many points a player would add to an average team giving us an even playing field. This is not the perfect solution – Wayne Rooney may score more than a Sheffield United player simply because of the quality of Manchester United’s passing – but we thought it was the fairest. So who won? The results are set out in the graphic. After all our effort, Fink Tank’s Player of the Year 2006-07 is the same as everyone else’s. Come on down, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Yeah I'm not too sure how scientific that actim index is Drogba before December 2006 and after are 2 different players The clutch FA cup final goal made people forget that he had been conspicuously absent for AGES I'll concede though drogba was by far the best CF in the EPL during the first half of the campaign(And perhaps the world alongside totti and later on the rejuvenated RVN) And 21 league goals for a defensive minded coach like Jose mourinho and in one of the most defensive league campaigns in English football history is no joke And drogba did not take penalties Think about that Not only that but he was doing alot of defensive work(for a forward) because that was required of him I think 21 open play league goals in that context was legendary no doubt
For a part I remembered this too, and then searched back the full and correct stat: This is since 1992, to be clear: 2 - Only the Netherlands have 2 keepers with two saved penalties in one Premier League game (Van der Sar, Stekelenburg). Double.— OptaJohan (@OptaJohan) October 15, 2016 1 - Tim Krul is the first goalkeeper to save two penalties in a single @premierleague game since Maarten Stekelenburg for Everton vs Man City in October 2016. Double-dutch. #NORMNU pic.twitter.com/McgdBiXAfE— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) October 27, 2019 In case it gets deleted: it seems like NED is the only country to have more than one goalkeeper to save two penalties in one EPL game (Van der Sar, Stekelenburg, Krul). With this post in mind: https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/has-lewandowski-surpassed-r9.2116738/page-2#post-39881531 Returning back to this, I also found some time ago a similar top-down attempt by scientists to calculate each player value in the 2013-14 league: https://gawhitaker.github.io/ISBIS_Jul18.pdf 1. Suarez 2. Sturridge 3. Aguero 4. Y. Toure 5. Rooney 6. Dzeko 7. Van Persie 8. Remy 9. Bony 10. Rodriguez Luis Suarez is unsurprisingly #1 for this season, followed by a Liverpool team-mate. More surprising perhaps, but matching the 'Fink Tank' thing, is Van Persie in his half-injured, stop-start and bit-part season (stats) still at #7, with the standard deviation allowing for a top three position (naturally there is a margin of error). While at WhoScored his rating and ranking was markedly lower as all the previous seasons. https://www.skysports.com/football/...-utds-last-premier-league-hat-trick-and-title https://www.skysports.com/football/...s-rank-him-as-one-of-the-premier-leagues-best Unfortunately, Ferguson departed and Moyes threw away his personally tailored fitness regime. The wrecked ankle (without punishment and deterrence...) became a problem. He was (obviously) never Cristiano Ronaldo, and e.g. Suarez had possibly a higher peak as well, but he was like I said before between 2006 and 2014 one of the best Premier League players throughout that time (when fit). The annoying thing is that relative to a Tevez (of course..) or the more prominent and shouted around Rooney he doesn't get the credit for what he still contributed. Not only in absolute performance, but also the general touch and quality of his play, the high level goals against the likes of Germany, Spain or peak-Barcelona (and: scoring in a CL semi final and also 3rd place for the World Cup).
One thing to realize here is there is a small margin of error in these sort of stats like assists. As the 'Football Hackers' book explains. Sometimes they get counted as an assist, sometimes not (even deviated/own goals aren't always uniform). So there might be 1 or 2 deviation. For example, Bergkamp might have double figures in both goals and assists for 1995-96 and 1996-97 as well, apart from the next two seasons (some sources do and imho there is a credible case for it).
The "tackles" column for these 1997-98 stats doesn't seem right here. Dividing by Prem minutes played for each player, we get Owen with 2.4 tackles per 90, Dion Dublin with 9.9 and Vieira with 11.4 per 90, which are surely way too high. On the other hand, "interceptions" look plausible: Speed on 2.69 per 90, Vieira on 1.79 and Beckham on 0.58 per 90. It's interesting that players made significantly more tackles in the 2000s compared to nowadays. The tackles per 90 minutes for the top 10 tacklers from each season here is around 5.3 per 90, whereas when you get to the 2017-18 season it drops to 3.8 and by the 2022-23 season it's at 3.5 per 90.
This is super interesting. What exactly is meant by "in a ice hockey manner"? Is the assist total here a combination of direct and second assist counts?
