When I was walking through the lobby on Wednesday to see ROTK, I saw a poster with a guy in a 1980 USA hockey sweater raising his arms in triumph against a black background. Above it, "MIRACLE ON ICE" was emblazoned in blue letters. Combined with "Game Of Their Lives", I've got two must-see moives coming up in the new year.
The movie is finished. It's called "Miracle" and comes out in January I believe. It stars Kurt Russell. I saw a preview two weeks ago.
As long as it finishes in a slo-mo of the captain being held aloft by his team mates punching the air, whilst shouting "Yeah !", it's all good. Keep the ending cheesy, as it will be sentimental tripe anyway.
And there's Mighty Ducks, which is essentially a fictionalized adaptation of the Miracle on Ice with kid hockey players and without the Soviets.
With Steve Guttenberg, no less! How could I have missed this. Aaaaah....all is once again right with the world...
The trailer doesn't look too bad. I just pray that this movie is worthy of this team and worthy of Herb Brooks, God rest his soul. http://movies.go.com/movies/M/miracle_2003/index.html
They need an epilogue, called "Scouring the Finns", in which Herb Brooks kicks the evil Saruman out of Minnesota while saying "If you lose this game, you'll regret it for the rest of your phuqqing lives."
It is very difficult to capture the raw emotions of sporting events in a movie. This one does have a very high bar to cross in my mind, since the Miracle on Ice is one of the most moving moments of our lives. That being said, the trailer did give me goose bumps and gives me high hopes, but I've seen more than one movie where the only good parts were the trailer.
