Millwall thugs run riot during Malcolm Allison tribute at Crystal Palace

    9:16am Wednesday 20th October 2010
Soccer hooligans ran amok during a memorial for a Crystal Palace legend in disgraceful scenes at the weekend.
Millwall thugs had to be held back by a police line when dozens of yobs attempted to storm home stands after tearing down safety barriers.
Leading Palace fans have called for a public apology from Millwall after the troublemakers ruined a minute’s applause for 83-year-old former manager Malcolm Allison.
The football legend, who died just 24 hours earlier, gained iconic status at the club after leading them to an FA Cup semi-final in 1976, coining their Eagles nickname and changing their colours to red and blue stripes.
Eight people were arrested before the match for offences including assault, carrying an offensive weapon and attacking a police officer.
One Millwall fan also threw a flare from the stands during the derby match, which ended in a 1-0 win for the visitors.
Former Croydon councillor Raj Chandarana, who sits on the board of the Crystal Palace supporters’ trust, described the scenes he witnessed on the day as “disgusting”.
He said: “There are two no man’s land areas on either side of the Millwall fans covered by anti-climb tarpaulins, and as soon as the minute’s applause started a whole bunch of them started wading in.
“They were booing and being very intimidating, and it looked at one point as if they were going to get on to the pitch. It was really offensive.
“This was supposed to mark the passing of a footballing institution, somebody who was colourful, lively and a real positive influence on the game.
“This was our chance to mark our respect for him and it was totally ruined.”
Stalwart Crystal Palace fan Councillor Steve O’Connell, who was also at the game, said: “I was sadly disappointed when many Millwall fans decided not to show their respect but chose to show their aggression.
“Malcolm Allison was one of my heroes and although a large majority of Millwall fans joined in the minutes applause, a significant minority prefer to have a fight.
“I am sadly not surprised by what happened.”
A Millwall FC spokesman said the vast majority of fans had joined the applause for Malcolm Allison, and confirmed the club had received no complaints from Crystal Palace or their fans.
He said: “If any individuals have genuine grievances surrounding the alleged behaviour of our fans on Saturday, they should direct them to the police and we will assist in any investigation that may ensue.”
A spokesman for Crystal Palace Football Club said: “We were happy with how the minute’s applause went for Malcolm Allison.”

Big goal from Puncheon, the new loanee from Southampton. Hopefully this win will bring the Lions out of their funk.

Anyone watch the Millwall v Scunthorpe game today? Lions won 3-0 and all three goals were of very high quality. Steve Morison's first goal was stunning. He tip-toed the end line and went near post on the keeper through a space that appeared smaller than the width of the ball.

Now we're up to 11th and feeling good about 2 wins and 1 tie in three games.

1-1 draw on Friday against Swans. Would have been happy with the point coming into the game, but after Moro missed 2 sitters am a bit frustrated we didn't walk with 3. Kenny sounded frustrated after the game as well.

four in a row unbeaten with Barnsley next week. Important midtable clash right there!

The Lions' 6 game unbeaten streak continues today as they breeze by Leicester 2-0 despite going down to 10 men early in the 2nd half. Moro and Puncheon getting the goals, finally getting the reward for the many chances they have created over the past few weeks.

A slight worry, going into the Palarse derby on Saturday, is the fact that three of our starting defenders are out: Robo, Shittu, and now Dunne after his ejection.

It's going to be a great New Year's game at the Den. I wish I could be there. COYL

Huge 3-0 win over south london derby rivals, Palace. Hattrick by Puncheon. Millwall move to 7 unbeaten and Palace fire their coach while they dwell in the cellar.

Great start to the new year!

Well done Millwall on the shock result. Make the most of being the leading South London club as Palace will soon be back to claim their rightful place as number one in Sarf Lundon. :D

It's going to be awhile until you can claim that, friend. However, I don't want to see you guys drop. The prospects of four Sarf Lundon derbies is too exciting for next year.

As with the 'Wall game Palace have rolled over and showen our soft underbelly to too many sides this season which eventually cost Burley his managers job. Dougie Freedman has a big job in keeping us up but if one man can the Doog can. The team needs to show the fighting spirit that kept us up on the last day of last season, so we dont miss out on what could potentially be an exciting 2011/12 season with at least 3 local derbies.

Qamle, I take it you are including Brighton as one of the four South London teams? Also dont forget that the happy Hammers also have a real fight on avoiding a drop into the Championship.

Well I meant that we'd have two games against you lot and two against West Ham.

Another big win for 'Wall last weekend. A deserved 2-1 win over against Ipswich. Moro missed a sitter in the first half, only to atone for his mistake for a late game winner. Up next, a tough match against Leicester, who are getting run around by City right now

Comfortable 2-0 win against Barnsley at the Den yesterday. Robbo is coming back next week but probably wont be ready for Norwich. Going to be a great game!

Next year is going to be fun for the London derbies. With the Hammers headed to relegation, QPR will be in the Prem playing Fulham and Chelsea and the Hammers against Millwall and Charleton. Good stuff.

Millwall are in big trouble now. I don't think they realised how much that they would miss Morison. It does'nt matter what level of football you are playing if you can't score goals you are not going to win any games.

We made it, and above Palarse if you can imagine! Those were some of the most frustrating games I've ever listened to, mid-season. But Kenny made some important signings during the winter window and Keogh got absolutely red-hot at the end of the season.

I have a feeling we'll be on the top half of the table this season.

    Four...?

Crystal Palace vs Millwall (home and away) = 2
Charlton Athletic vs Millwall (home and away) = 2
Charlton Athletic vs Crystal Palace (home and away) = 2

Totals 6 South London derbies by my maths.

    Forgetting somebody, were we...?

Malcolm Allison is a legend at Manchester City. When he joined us at Maine Road in 1965, under the management of Joe Mercer, we were a moderate second tier club. By 1966, we were second division champions. It was Mal who spotted the abilities of Francis Lee at Bolton, Tony Book at Bath City, Mike Summerbee at Swindon and Colin Bell at Bury. Those players were purchased for around £100,000 for the lot. What would they be worth at today's prices..?

By 1968, City were league champions and the FA Cup, League Cup, Charity Shield and European Cup Winners Cup followed in the next two years. Joe Mercer then retired, and Big Mal took over as manager and nearly won another league championship in 1972. Ironically, City finished their league programme that season at the top of the table, but Derby County and Leeds had still to play each other and whatever way the result went, either or both of them would finish above us. Ironically, City finished their season at the top of the table but couldn't win the league. It was Derby who squeezed in to take their first championship title under Brian Clough.

Mal left, but came back later for another, less successful spell at Maine Road, before moving on to Palace where he inspired a revolution. He took Palace from the old third division to the first. He made Peter Taylor an England international while Palace were still in Division three (the last player to achieve this). He successfully rebranded the club and gave them a level of "glamour" they'd never known before. He made Palace cool.

Ironically, it was a 2 - 1 win for Palace over Manchester City at Selhurst Park (I was there) that took them to the top of the first division for a while. The only occasion in their history that they have ever led the league.

Malcolm Allison had a charismatic personality. He smoked Cuban cigars, he had champagne for breakfast and he wore a big hat. There was even a romp in the bath at Selhurst Park with porn actress Fiona Richmond.... a story the press 'somehow' got hold of. Nobody was scandalised, it was just Big Mal being his usual larger than life self. The fans just loved him all the more for it.

Malcolm Allison defied the negative, cynical conventions of the day. His teams played open, attacking football. He signed flair players like Franny Lee, Rodney Marsh and Peter Taylor because he thought that football was meant to be about class, style and attacking play.

He had flair, charisma, personality, warmth and charm. He was talented, intelligent, knowledgeable about the game and he loved to see it played in the right way. Above all, he was popular. He was loved by everybody he worked with, and to those who knew him, he will be sadly missed.

He was everything Millwall aren't. That's why they booed him.
