Did I just hear the news say he joined the nation of Islam with Farrakhan?

This just gets weirder and weirder. Can't wait to see him in a bowtie though...

Jermaine is in the NOI, so it's not that surprising, I would think. It is a natural move for someone who has been increasingly outspoken about "racism" in the music industry.

I expect this is going to get a whole lot crazier before this whole thing is over, in the end, with Jacko sharing a cell with his partner is Islam and celebrity (and wackoness) Mike Tyson.

chocolate...I get that you yourself are a Muslim, and that's great.

How familiar are you with the Nation of Islam, tho? I mean, I'm a Christian, but if I read that Michael Jackson had joined the Branch Davidians I wouldn't be going "yay for him."

You missed the point of superdave's post. The Nation of Islam are a bunch of nutballs. I have the utmost respect for Muslims and Islam, but these guys are, for the most part, idiots.

The great Elijah Muhammad will smite you for that one! Well, either that, or one of his bazillion kids will do it.

"The Nation of Islam" is a blasphemous organization started in the early part of this century by a black man from Detroit. I forget his name right now, but his first convert took the name Elijah Muhammed, who later changed this to the "Prophet Elijah Muhammed," hence the blasphemy, since the Koran is very clear on the real Prophet Muhammed being the "last prophet." In addition, the "Nation" only took some parts of true Islamic thought and blended it with other things they just came up with on their own. The five pillars, for instance, are totaly different.

The most famous "Nation" convert was Malcolm X, but he eventually left it and converted to true Islam, made a pilgrimmage to Mecca, and then was (apparently) assassinated by the "Nation" for doing so.

In recent years, most "Nation" members have left that faith and moved into "the American Muslim Mission," which is the collective term for all America's true Muslims.

The "Nation" still exists, but on a very small scale.

OK, I'm glad that got cleared up. :)

chocolate, one of the tenets of the Nation is that white people are devils. I don't think that quite matches with mainstream Islam.

A few years ago, I was in a student group that got a chance to talk with a Moroccan professor of religion (at Ifrane, DrJones) about different branches and aspects of Islam. I asked him about 'orthodox' Muslim attitudes towards the largely Western phenomenon of the NOI, and his response was that NOI members who take the Islam side of the equation (as opposed to the black power side) seriously tend to progess along the same route that Malcolm X was taking, towards the more orthodox branches, and in this respect it was not a bad thing - but it was still not the 'real' Islam.

sh.it.. i didnt see this post but the koran has said that a person would come later on (this was said 14 centuarys ago) and would say that he is the prophet and wil have the same name as the prophet. everybody is watchin out for this person that is due to come some day. (but the koran didnt mention what era this person would come) no one thought that this person would be in america. sh.it.

You can rest assured that the "Prophet" Elijah Mohammad of the NOI was not the return of the Prophet.
