Pretty sad for so much time, energy and money spent! These penalties will hurt over the next couple of years.
Its sad Higuain is retiring. I know it’s a young man’s game and all but he seems to score goals wherever he goes. Even though he is 35, he has bounced back and scored quite a few goals for Miami. I think he still will have contributed and scored a lot more had he continued playing. https://www.intermiamicf.com/news/gonzalo-higuain-to-retire-at-end-of-2022-campaign
He sure is in good form right now, and with his talent for goals he could surely compete a couple more years. I guess it must be difficult for him to get fit for another season, he's a larger dude and like you say at 35 yrs old it might just be more than he can see doing for a few more years.
I followed Higuain extensively at Napoli and Juventus and he never seemed to have issues with being fit. MLS is weird circuit as many superstars fail but pure goal scorers like ibrahimovic , Henry and Gonzalo , even at an advanced age do well. The only thing I can think of that is making him want to quit now are recurring injuries and just being tired of training every day.
Yes I agree. At his age, recovery from injury takes longer and the MLS season is difficult for reasons that some other leagues don't endure. A few players now retired from MLS have cited how the travel is demanding, the League calendar doesn't always break with the international windows and there are artificial pitches at some clubs, etc. By none of this do I wish to knock his decision, I just hear what some other players have mentioned and I think it all factors into how long a player who is advanced in age decides to play.
Yes playing in the heat of Florida in the summer months I’m sure isn’t easy. In Italy, the farthest they traveled was Palermo or Naples and Rome. In MLS you fly to NY to Montreal to LA to Vancouver to Chicago and back. It’s tough for players 25-30 so I can imagine how tough it would be for a 35 year old. I remember Rodney Marsh of the Tampa Bay Rowdies also quit in the
I re-edited before I reached the time limit....... I remember Rodney Marsh of the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the old NASL retired at 35 just after his team made the Soccer Bowl 2 years in a row. He said the travel across North America in the summer months was just brutal. That was also a time when the old league had 24 teams. He said he just couldn't do it anymore. MLS next year will have 29 teams so the league has become huge. I'm sure many foreigners now know how tough it is and nowhere near an easy pub league as was the narrative.
Hi guys, Sorry if this is a stupid question, but when you Miami play home games in July and august, isnt it unbearably hot and humid?? Or do the players adapt to the weather??
Yes you are correct, it's not great weather for soccer. There is also frequent rain during those months, making the field heavy and slower, etc For games I think players can disregard the conditions and just play, but I imagine training daily throughout the summer weather here must be a real drag.
Now that Higuain is retired, there is no doubt Beckham will go after Messi after the World Cup.. Ornstein: Inter Miami increasingly confident of signing Lionel Messi
I thought so. I follow MLB a bit and I know Marlins play in an airco stadium. Would be great if Inter could play there as well, but I guess that was never gonna happen. Maybe Inter will become so successfull eventually that they can afford to build their own airco stadium
I'm going back and forth on whether his signing will be a good move or not. I think it may be great for fans and league exposure but on the other hand, I honestly don't think he will score as many goals as Higuain. Also, Lionel Messi will have turned 36 by the time he steps foot in Florida and older susperstars don't usually win trophies in MLS.
yup, Its hot af and humid and nasty here in the summer. Absolutely unbearable at times, fortunately now it is fall and instead of it being 95 degrees (fahrenheit) it is now 84 degrees. I guess the players get used to it, must be rough for the europeans though and even for Phil Neville.
