Brew City News (29-July)

League Cup: Millville United continue to set the League pace by edging Millville United FC 48:44. It was a week of close games, as Aviators swapped into the second place position held by the side they defeated, Top Shelf, 44:41. In the 2nd Division, Princeton Tigers 02 retained the top spot with a 46:44 victory over Guinness Gulpers FC, who held onto the second promotion spot because third place Victoria Bitter FC lost by an even larger margin, 33:48 to Alewive FC. In the 3rd Division, the top four teams all won, while bottom feeding NE Arsenal, Wadingpool FC, Philadelphia Atoms and Midnights Children have only six points between them in twelve matches. (None of those points coming against the top four sides.)

All-Star Break: There are no real MLS matches this upcoming weekend (August 3), so the next round of MFLS competition will be on August 10. Sorry, but this Wednesday (July 31) matches do not count for any Brew City competitions.

Preston, I know matches didn't count last night, but you have Aug. 10th listed as week 20, where it will be week 21 and so forth. Might cause some confusion down the road.
Noticed on another thread that Hal's Aviators are down to 0 transfers remaining. If that's true of many of the top teams, my midshelf Midnights Children may be ready to climb back into the hunt (7 moves still to use).
Week 21 news League Cup: If the games this week were close, it was only because the scores were so low. Mediocrity reigned to the benefit of teams needing results to stay in contention. In the 1st Division, Top Shelf moved from third to first by defeating Abracadabra 17:3, while previous leaders Millville United lost to relegation threatened France, 4:19. The 2nd Division leaders were the only side to retain top spot, Princeton Tigers 02 eeking out a 5:5 draw against fifth place Victoria Bitter FC. In the 3rd Division, Bandeirantes Internacional retained the league's only perfect record with a 11:3 win over second place St. Louis Cure. Darcian Greywacke moved from third into second thanx to a massive point difference of +68. In the Toilet Bowl battle of the league's two pointless bottom teams, Midnight's Children were the side who salvaged some respect with a 15:7 win over Philadelphia Atoms. p.s. - Do not ever, ever, ever give any money to CoreComm or Voyager.Net: They blow monkeys.
Brew City News (19-Aug) League Cup: Top Shelf retained the top spot in the the league for the second week running, with a 42:23 victory over JC Comets. Four 1st Division teams are level on nine points, separated only by 'goal' difference. Aviators moved from fourth place into second courtesy of a 33:27 win over France. FC Metrofan CP are set for the drop with two weeks to play. In the 2nd Division, Princeton Tigers 02 also retain the top spot, despite losing a close one at home, 15:17 to Shaolin Mystigods. Three teams are level on nine points for the other promotion spot, with Phoenix TS holding a healthy advantage at +58 'goals' over third place Surreywood Rangers only on +10. Only four points separate Tigers 02 from seventh place Mystigods, so no 2nd Division team is assured of staying up. There were no real changes in the 3rd Division, Bandeirantes Internacional continuing to hold the league's only perfect record due to a Bandeirantes Internacional 34:19 win over Austin Rovers, guaranteeing Internacional promotion. Philadelphia Atoms are also perfect, but not in the way they'd prefer, having lost every match including this week's 24:-9 blowout by seventh place Wadingingpool FC. http://www.execpc.com/~pvmiii/brewcity/cupcomp.html#LeagueCup
Brew City News (26-Aug) League Cup: It was a week of upsets throughout the league, as the top two teams in all three divisions lost, making 2002 the tightest race in Brew City history. In the first division, Top Shelf, Millville United and JC Comets are all even on 12 points, with Top Shelf holding a significant advantage in 'goals'. Aviators, MurphDogs and France, being only three points back, also have a possible title in their sites, if results fall right. On the other hand, those three teams could also get relegated, as they are only three points ahead of seventh place France. FC Metrofan CP picked up its first points of the League Championship, edging Aviators 32:31, but is doomed regardless. Interestingly enough, in five of eight 1st and 2nd Division matches, one or two 'goals' made the difference. In the 2nd Division, Guinness Gulpers jumped from fourth all the way to first, by scoring a division-high 37 points to Surreywood Rangers' 22. Gulpers have 12 points, to 10 for Princeton Tigers 02 and Victoria Bitter FC. Also in contention for promotion are Phoenix TS, Surreywood Rangers and, amazingly enough, Alewive FC. (Though that group could be relegated as well.) The bottom two clubs -- Carabinas Real and Shaolin Mystigods -- next week play each other to avoid the drop, a draw damaging both sides' cause. In the 3rd Division, the top three teams have dominated the last five weeks, but that ended as well this week. Despite losing 21:31 to bottom-feeding Philadelphia Atoms, Bandeirantes Internacional are already promoted. However, the fight for the other promotion spot tightened up: Darcian Greywacke and St. Louis Cure are both on 12 points, while NE Arsenal and Wadingpool FC have an outside chance on 9. At the bottom of the league, Midnights Children and Austin Rovers still could yet take the Toilet Bowl by losing by a large margin, as they lead Philadelphia Atoms by three points.
Brew City News (4-Sep) League Cup: Despite the final week of the season being Brew City's closest ever race, in all three divisions, the result was the same as in previous year's: Top Shelf are champions. Millville United finished level on points with 15, but Top Shelf took the honors on 'goal' difference, +58 to +15, after both sides won their final match. JC Comets, which had been level with United and Top Shelf on 12 points, but needing a miracle to overcome the 'goal' difference, lost its final match 29:33 to United. Already relegated FC Metrofan CP ensured France joined them in the drop by beating the Gauls 44:25. In the 2nd Division, Guinness Gulpers FC and Princeton Tigers 02 are promoted, while Shaolin Mystigods and Carabinas Real are relegated. Victoria Bitter could have pipped Gulpers with a win, but the Bitters-Gulpers match ended 29:29. Princeton Tigers 02 pounded Alewive FC 43:17. Meanwhile, Carabinas Real did everything in its power to climb above Alewive by defeating Mystigods in a barnburner, 52:41. The 37-'goal' difference swing was close, but too far: Level on 9 points, Alewive ended with -16 'goal' difference to -18 for Carabinas. In the 3rd Division, Bandeirantes Internacional and Darcian Greywacke are promoted, while Philadelphia Atoms won the Toilet Bowl award as the league's bottom side. (Atoms actually got worse as the season progressed, finishing sixth, seventh and then eighth, in the 3rd Division, in the Spring, Summer and League Championships.) Austin Rovers finished fifth, thanx to final week 20:-7 defeat of Atoms, sending their supporters into joyous paroxysms at the side's highest finish in memory. Abracadabra, MurphDogs and Top Shelf are the only sides to spend every season in the 1st Division.
Brew City News (8-Sep) Brew City MFLS Cup: 1999 champion Top Shelf holds a 40-point lead over second place Phoenix TS, while 2001 champion Aviators are third, 52 points back.
