i read somewhere that Mexico is not aloud to send their best team to Copa America but instead must send their olympic team. is this true? if it is true why is this?

Concacaf wants to prioritize their tournament(s) (Gold Cup) and Mexico being a Concacaf rep must adhere to their policy. So they have been required by Concacaf to field a u-23 team with as amny as 5 senior players.

    is not just mexico
any team from concacaf will have to field a U23 grp

on the other hand is good and will just have a stronger side for mexico in the near futher. just look at the last fluke in WC......not a very SOLID BENCH AND lack of international mentality for some of them changed odds:(

If CONCACAF wants to have their tournament every two years that's their problem. But having the thing held the year after the World Cup is pretty much the best decision CONMEBOL ever made.

well from US perspective i would love this

    2010 - World Cup
    2011- Copa America
    2012 - Gold cup
    2013 - Confed cup
    2014- World Cup

Why? For the US perspective the Copa América wasn't important but the Confederation Cup was, too late... Also in 2012 there's the olympic games. Still it's the best decision CONMEBOL made.

I've actually read that the reason Mexico is sending their Olympic team is because of Europe meddling into other countries' business. The UEFA had proposed to prohibit teams from participating in competitions of other confederations.

Europe should mind their own business.

As of right now, Japan was invited but might not participate. I'm hoping they do drop out and possibly allow the USA to be invited.

In addition to sending their Olympic team (Born in and after 1989), Mexico will be allowed to send 5 overaged players. That means the Dos Santos Bros, Carlos Vela, Pacheco and Calderon are all eligible to play. Add to this 5 "senior" players and it will be a fairly good team. This is for sure going to be the minimum Mexico will send.

Nothing is set in stone and perhaps guest countries will be able to send their best teams.

There is also another rumor that Mexico will host the Copa America. This was the rumor for 2009 (not held) and is being discussed for 2013. Reason being that Brazil was next to host it after 2011 but will already be hosting the Confederations Cup in 2012, World Cup in 2014 and 2016 Olympics.

uefa hasn't proposed to ban teams from playing in other confederations championships, it's just that european clubs don't want to release players in such cases. this is a completely reasonable position.

this didn't use to be an issue when there weren't many mexicans playing in europe.

    Why have guests at all?

Every regional tournament should have teams from their own region participating. Seriously, why have Japan play in a South American tournament? It would be like having Colombia play in the Asian cup.

Concacaf ended the guest thing why can't we?

I agree, there should be no outsiders period. I remember a couple years back they had this idea of letting Portugal and Spain in because they were the countries that colonized South America. For the love of God, really? They have their own cup to worry about. Which in 2016 will be 24 teams or so .

Error, brings money to CONMEBOL's wallets, if it was a benefit for the nations in a way or another, but it isn't, but eh evidently it isn't enough and that's where Japan comes into the mix and the reality is that for CONMEBOL there's no difference.

The Mexicans should not be allowed in the Liberadores let lone Copa America. Having all these teams outside of their respected regions just does not sit well. All these teams have their own tournaments.

Well i looked it up in 1999 they invited Japan too, not Spain(don't know where did the Spain thing came from maybe they had the intention to invite them but didn't happen), they were in Group A with Paraguay, Peru and Bolivia, lost with Paraguay 4-0, lost with Peru 3-2 and tied with Bolivia 1-1.

This. If they want to join our tournaments they must also join the WC qualify.
Im sure they prefer to keep playing with Barbuda, Haiti, Turks and Caicos hahahha.

The travel would be brutal. But I heard something about Concacaf cutting even the final WCQ into two different groups, can somebody clarify that.

The Gold Cup is a joke anyways, they have a team called Guadeloupe playing in it. That would be like us inviting Guyana to Copa America. I am glad they took away the US' spot from it, they did not take it seriously, at least the Mexicans saw the importance of it. The US milked it in 07 so they could get a ticket to Confederations Cup for 08.

Haha totally, but hey... if we played against Guadalupe or Haiti we would never make it to the world cup.
At least thats what the mexicans think.

This is not Concacaf, there is plenty of competition as it is with teams like Brasil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile etc.

Brasil would bring tons of competition to the AFC but you don't see them getting invited to the Asian cup.

Unfortunatly it's all about the benjamins with Conmebol.
