    <sigh>

    Here we go again. This was tried before and was dropped. The problem is that once you get to the last few games, there's usually one or two teams already eliminated and playing against teams that still have a chance to win the group. Where's the excitement in that ? How can anyone say that is more exciting than the current knockout format ?

    This is just an obvious money grab.

    Next they'll build up the first division back to 20 teams and add wildcards to the liguilla...

    For the added excitement....

    This was discussed in the Random Football Related thread that's the reason it don't have a thread in the main page.

    I like this format. It takes a bit of the luck out of the playoffs so you'll see the best teams making the championship final more often. And it nearly doubles the number of playoff matches from 14 to 26, so more money to be made. And while nearly doubling the number of matches, it only extends the playoffs by 2 rounds (6 rounds to 8 rounds), so the competition only lasts a week longer. Finally, it makes it a bit more likely that we would see more rivalry matches.

    As for teams being eliminated from contention, they still need to play the teams that are in contention. It's like a Champions League group, except that only the group winner moves on.

    We will have to see this in action before we can come to any real conclusions. However, getting rid of the 3 regular season groups is almost certainly a step in the right direction.

    1. More money for who? (or is it whom?) the 10 teams outside the playoff? Televisa? TV Azteca? FMF? 8 teams in the playoff?

    2. Still the half tournaments correct? so 2 extra weeks, 1 per half tournament.

    3. Yes getting rid of the groups was a good idea.

    4. Over/under on number of years before this changes? I say 2.

    I say 1. Watch two good teams in one group be tied going into the last games in the round robin and one of them plays an already eliminated club while the other plays a club still in the running and well, you know the rest.

    They were so close to getting it right and they had to go ahead and mess up the playoffs.

    After this year, I hope they get it right and stick with it for good: One table in the regular season, best 8 go to the playoffs which is home and away series.
