I like the fact that Mexican clubs participate in the Copa Libertadores, but I m just getting tired of the bullshyt they have to go through to participate. I think its time that Mexico gets a fair deal. I think they should get 2 direct spots. When they were first allowed these were some of the concerns *It will dilute the Copa Libertadores. As you can see, it hasnt. Not only are they better than Venezuelan clubs, but are amongst the best in the hemishpere. *South American fans will not be interested and attendance and ratings will go down. At first yes, but now they have made believers of many, including the press. And South Americans keep keep an eye on thier countrymen playing in the MFL. AND the ratings are better. More audience in Mexico and in the US. The Copa Libertadores is now seen in the US because of the millions of Mexicans who want to see thier teams participate in the Copa Libertadores. I dont think its cool that Jack Warner is trying to leech off of us, but I dont care if other TFC members want to participate. I just think other TFC clubs will go at a major disadvantage. Not having the financial resources and limited rosters will be a huge problem. Many of the Central American and Carribean clubs dont have adequate facilities. And to ask them to play a TFC tournament, then a longer 36 team Copa Libertaodres tourny is a little demanding. I say phuck it. Lets not play it anymore until we get a direct ticket. Phuck the Pre Pre and the Pre and Phuck having to use the TFC as a ticket to the Copa Libertaodres. We have earned our keep. We have paid our dues and then some. I gaurentee that the CONMEBOL will lose with us not participating. They will lose millions and i dont mean money either (but that too). For every 1 that will watch it just to watch it, there will be 10 that wont watch it because a mexican club is not participating and they are tired of the BS. see how they like it. They lose millions of fans in mexico and in the US. You can kiss BYE BYE the Copa Libertoadres in the US and will have to pay out the wazoo to watch teams like Boca and River on PPV. 2-3 million we spend just to play the bocas, rivers, santos, etc. With that money we can have a ************ load of "quadrangulares" and not have to waste our time with the smaller teams from South America. We got the money to do it also.
you said something interesting there which is that conmebol realizes the economic benefit and sporting benefit of mexican teams in libertadores. I wonder what would happen when the contract with venezuela runs out and mexican teams call for 2 direct spots. I bet you conmebol would consider it even more so knowing now that they want to give 2 copa libertadores spots for the tfc champ and co-champ.
Well, i cant speak on behalf of every Mexican and Mexican American, but for example.. within my circle of friends and other peers, we wouldnt pay to watch the copa libertaodres if Mexican clubs didnt participate. Sure we may go to a bar to watch the final or something like that.. but thats it. With them participating, I make it a point to watch it.. not just the mexican clubs, but the other clubs as well. THe only reason i ordered the SPanish package, which includes FSWE, was to watch the mexican teams play. If they were not participating, id cancel it right then and there... I am fine having Univision, Galavision, Telefutura, Azteca America, & Telemundo.. I get those channels for free anyhow.
Which direction is the MFL leaning towards if any?" if not mistaken the mfl wants to buy the rights to the pre pre to make it easier for mexican teams to get to libertadores. I don't know know how they will do it maybe the champ and runner up go straight to playing the venezuelan teams, or the mexican teams will have a pre pre like they have now but obviously with a lot less games.
The recent article that said CONMEBOL was going to give 4 spots to CONCACAF - 2 to the CONCACAF Champions' Cup finalists and 2 yet to be determined. That pretty much guarentees Mexican participation. There are maybe 2 MLS teams and maybe 3 Central American teams that could compete for that. Maybe there will be a pre-pre that includes non-finalists. Whatever they decide, I think the road for Mexican clubs to the Libertadores just got a little easier.
I agree, the MFL clubs have definitely earned their spots in the Copa Libertadores. I would be totally pumped if CONCACAF got four spots, two direct to the MFL and two to the Champion and Runner-up of the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
I really don't wanna see MLS clubs in the Copa Libertadores until the rosters are expanded, cuz at their present state the MLS teams could be mauled and that's not gonna look so good for the quality of the league. Although I still like the idea of the top 2 Mexican clubs and the TFC Finalists to go. Hopefully MLS will have the funds to expand roster size soon.
You are right mexican teams will continue to participate and that seems almost guaranteed, unlike a few years ago when they didnt want mexican teams. Although that is not what rdl is complaining about. He is complaining about mexican teams not getting a fair deal and he is right. Mexican teams are paying a lot of money to venezuela plus they are having to play that pre pre plus the venezuelan teams and this tires the players. 2 things can happen 1. 2 direct spots for mexican teams 2. the FMF buys the pre pre rights and has less games in it, or no pre pre at all and the mexican champ or runner up play the venezuelan teams directly. notice I didnt put as a third option what is happening now because i think the FMF will end up buying the rights to pre pre and changing the system.
that's exactly how I feel. Having the Mexican teams participate is what makes me really care about the Copa. Without them playing, I'd just wait to see the final rounds as long as they were on free TV. I just wish the FMF would get their shyt together and get a reasonable calendar for the teams that participate. Or at least give some breaks to the teams that make it to the latter rounds. To make a team play with no rest between games is ridiculous.
easier said than done.... we have to plan our calender based on 2 confederations.... and it it hard We also have more games because of the liguilla... add the pre pre and the Pre.. and the copa libertaodres.. lets not forget the CCC.... thats why the FMF needs to buy the rights to the Pre pre and just do away with them
That would help. But couldn't they just state up front for example, that teams should not be forced to play on consecutive days ? Just to cite an example, would it have killed the FMF to allow Cruz Azul to play their first leg of the Chivas Repechaje on Friday instead of Thursday ? If they would just stipulate this at the beguinning of each tourney, then each team would know where they stand should they make it into the latter rounds of the Libertadores. I don't really care much about the CCC. Unless Concacaf wants to poney up real cash for the teams, playing in it is more of a risk to the players.
There are two important points. First of all, if it's true that Conmebol is giving 4 spots to Concacaf to the Libertadores, 2 to the Confederation's club competition champion and runner up; and the other 2 to be determined (you can read between the lines they are for Mexie teams) Mexico will most likely have all four of them. Maybe they should get at least one spot to one non Mexican team every year. The other thing is all this threatening I read against Conmebol: "uh... if you don't give us direct spots we will go away". Of course Conmebol wants Mexican clubs in the Libertadores, but they will never give it away for free, because they know, as I know, that Mexican clubs will never retire from it. They want it, they love it, they need it. I can certainly see in the future an easier road for the Mexicans to get to the tournament, but Conmebol still has the FMF clubs by the balls, because the Libertadores existed way before they took part in it, and quite succesfully. If they want to be in it, they'll have to play by Conmebol's rules.
regardless of whether the Copa Libertadores was successful before Mexican clubs began participating in it, the fact remains that their participation is now a known quantity, and as such, is something CONMEBOL would not likely be willing to do without. If for some reason, Mexican clubs do not continue to participate in the tournament, CONMEBOL will be fully aware of the potential revenue from their participation and I can't imagine that they would forego partaking in those revenue streams given what they know about what it can offer them. ricv56
Before the start of this Copa Libertadores CONMEBOL decreased the prize money for teams advancing past the first round, Imagine them losing the MFL competition. I really doubt FSWE and the Mexican Tv would continue to purchase the TV rights after the TV ratings significantly drop. Not to sound arroganmt but befor the MFL clubs played in Copa Libertadores the only way to see CL in the U.S was to pay PPV in some South America Bar.. Same goes for Copa America.
great news and it looks to be a sure thing that mexico will get 2 direct spots. so who would play in the 04 libertadores? monterrey? and how would the 2 spots be decided? i hope they give it to the champion and superlider
The rumor is that CONMEBOL is going to increase the slots from 32 to 36, which would include two slots for MFL clubs. It begs the question, though: Would there ever be any purpose to the Pre-Pre with this plan?
Like I said in an earlier post... no Libertadores for the Mexican Clubs, my money stops and will cancel FSWE. Its that simple
Steve H. Fox Sports World which has become one of Copa Libertadores main sponsers have requested to CONMEBOL that the MFL receive two berths in the tournament. Given that the MFL clubs allready have a playoffs pre-Libertadores matches against Venezuelan clubs it is possible that we could be seeing up to four Mexican Clubs in Copa Libertadores..
