    MetroStars 0-2 Wizards [R]

Fort Lauderdale, Florida (Friday, March 7, 2003) - The MetroStars and Kansas City played a scrimmage at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale Friday afternoon with the Wizards winning by a score of 2-0.

The MetroStars fielded a mostly different squad each half to allow the team to give as many players a chance to see competitive action as the Florida preseason schedule slowly winds to a conclusion in the next few days.

The team will return home on Tuesday, March 11 for several days of local rest before departing again on Friday, March 14 for two weeks of preseason training in Argentina.

The MetroStars were almost on the scoreboard first in the 11th minute. Former Metz midfielder Frederic Meyrieu sent a hard free kick from 20-yards into the Wizards defensive wall, but the rebound carried back to the Frenchmen and his ensuing shot was saved by a diving Tony Meola to his right.

The Wizards did open the scoring in the 25th minute with Diego Gutierriez’s long free kick from near midfield. The long ball found a breaking Igor Simutenkov in the box for a one-timer into the far right corner past Paul Grafer.

The start of the second half saw many substitutions by the MetroStars, while the Wizards started with a majority of their first-team players.

Simutenkov scored his second goal three minutes into the half when he took a through ball by Preki and fired a shot that a charging Paul Grafer managed to block. However, the rebound ricocheted off the Russian, who managed to track it down again, and fire a second shot for the goal.

The MetroStars received a great opportunity in the 75th minute, but were stopped on another great save by Meola. Morris Pagniello, a defender/midfielder who most recently played for SV Telstar in Holland, fired a hard shot from 18-yards, but Meola stretched and used his fingertips to tip the ball over the crossbar to keep the scrimmage and eventual score at 2-0.

The MetroStars will conclude their Florida scrimmages this upcoming Monday afternoon, March 10 at 3:00 p.m. ET, when they face the Columbus Crew. The scrimmage, previously scheduled for the Sunrise Soccer Complex, will now be played at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida.

NOTES: Tim Howard (left elbow sprain) and Jaime Moreno (left ankle sprain) did not play in the scrimmage. Both are listed as day-to-day …Young MetroStar Mike Magee scored the lone goal Friday (second overall in tournament) in a 1-0 win over a Madeira Select as the United States won the 7th Annual Madeira International Tournament in Portugal…Forward Tommy Mooney, most recently of Sheffield Wednesday, has joined the team in camp for a look.

MET: Paul Grafer; Kieran McAnspie (Tim Glowienka 46), Eddie Pope (Kenny Arena 46), Steve Jolley (Marco Velez 46); Richie Williams (Morris Pagniello 46, Joaquin Alvarez 80), Tim Regan (Joe Addo 46), Edgar Bartolomeu (Albert Munoz 46), Craig Ziadie (Jeff Moore 46), Frederic Meyrieu (Chris Sanje 46); Giovanni Savarese (Jacob Le Blanc 46), Tommy Mooney (Derk Droze 46).

KC: Tony Meola; Jimmy Conrad, Nick Garcia, Jose Burciaga Jr., Diego Gutierrez (Stephen Armstrong 46’); Chris Brown (Jack Jewsbury 61), Carey Talley, Francisco Gomez; Preki, Igor Simutenkov (Aleksey Korol 70), Dario Fabbro (Davy Arnaud 66).

Wizards Post Fourth Shutout of Preseason with 2-0 Win Over MetroStars

FT. LAUDERDALE, FL (March 7, 2003) The Kansas City Wizards picked up their fourth shutout of the 2003 preseason with a 2-0 win over the MetroStars on Friday afternoon. The Wizards got two goals from Russian international Igor Simutenkov to remain unbeaten in 2003.

Simutenkov's first goal came in the 25th minute off a ball from Francisco Gomez. The 29-year-old striker recorded his second goal of the match in the 52nd minute with the assist coming from MLS all-time leading scorer Preki.

The team looked solid defensively, rarely allowing their MLS rival a clear chance on goal. Defender Jimmy Conrad made his return to the Wizards lineup after suffering a mild concussion while training in Kansas City on February 28th.

    Scoring Summary:
KC- Igor Simutenkov (Francisco Gomez) 25'
    KC- Igor Simutenkov (Preki) 52'

Kansas City Lineup: Tony Meola-GK, Nick Garcia, Jimmy Conrad, Jose Burciaga, Diego Gutierrez (Stephen Armstrong-46), Francisco Gomez, Carey Talley (Lazo Alavanja-75), Preki, Chris Brown, Dario Fabbro (Davy Arnaud-65), Igor Simutenkov (Aleksey Korol-75)

Maybe I'm oldschool, but putting [R] in the thread title is meant to keep people from unwillingly learning the result.

More details are available on the Mutts board. It looks like they used anybody available for the game. In any case, a win is nice.

    GO Wizards!

    Well said.

Good stuff, actual goals, Simu with two cobra strikes, Preki making passes, Diego using guile, Meola swatting away whatever makes it through the strainer, the men at the back playing 90, a goal in each half for symetry, McGee overseas beating up on the Portugese; absolutely nothing wrong on this night - except maybe Mo was on the wrong side...

The four at the back played the full 90, early indication that defense will, without question, be the cornerstone for success in '03 (big shock).

I'm curious what Zags was doing, Talley in his roll tonight I guess. I'd like to see Fabbro come up with something in the pre-season also. Anyone have shot totals/stats?

Good to see we beat an MLS team, and good to see Igor score. Where was Klein?

Note: Please don't post entire articles in a thread. Post a highlight and give a link please. Thanks.

I suspect that it's OK to post a press release verbatim. That's what they're for.

Also, I didnt even realize it, but the reason for the [R] is to warn of a result in the thread. It's purpose is kinda defeated by the 0-2 scoreline included in the title of this thread. Granted, not like any of us will be watching it on tape after, but its the principle.
