http://www.metrostars.com/metronews/submissions/2004/march/03022004v2.shtml MetroStars to Meet Long Island Rough Riders on July 13th “Red and Black” to Make First Appearance in Long Island Since August of 2002 SECAUCUS, NJ (Tuesday, March 2, 2004) – The MetroStars announced today that they will meet the Long Island Rough Riders, of the USL Pro-Select League, in an exhibition match at Mitchel Stadium on Tuesday, July 13 at 7:30 p.m. ET. “This is a great way to showcase the best soccer in the country to the Long Island community,” said MetroStars President and General Manager Nick Sakiewicz. “The MetroStars see this as a way for the team to meet a quality opponent in an exhibition match during the regular season. We hope to use this match as preparation for a successful post season run.” This announcement comes in conjunction with the recently announced marketing partnership between the two clubs. “The Rough Riders are proud to host this match on Long Island,” said Rough Riders General Manager Jim Kilmeade. “The MetroStars are a tremendous club and it will be a great test for our guys. Most importantly, the fans of Long Island and Metro NY deserve this match.” The game will mark the first time that the Metros have played in Long Island since August 7, 2002, when “Red and Black” hosted the Columbus Crew in the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The MetroStars fell to the Crew 2-1 in that contest, despite receiving a goal from Rodrigo Faria. A crowd of 8, 314 came to the Long Island complex to support the Metros
Actually, to try to attract soccer fans who are commutters, they will also be playing the rough riders on the LIRR. A specially outfitted train with one grass car will host the game. The train will be the 5:34pm express to Huntinton, on the Port Jefferson Line. The train will make stops at Jamaica, Hicksville, and Huntington. At Halftime, the players will change trains in Huntington to the local, and the game will make stops at Greenlawn, Northport, Kings Park, Smith Town, St. James, Stony Brook and Port Jefferson. All throw ins will take place from the vestibules near the doorway, the door at either end will act as the goals, and corner kicks will be taken from the conductor's booth. The LIRR asks that all players please have tickets ready for collection. Thank you.
Pretty funny. As a frequent rider on the LIRR, I can tell you that there is very, very little interest in soccer on the train. In 2002 WC, when we played Portugal, I used my portable tv on the 6:11 from Hicksville to watch the the second half. No one came over to look over my shoulder or ask for the score. Even in the closing minutes when I was standing on the Jamaica platform, there was nada interest.
Just a thought, would anyone be interested in a pre or post game pub meeting at the Celtic Corner (Old Shilling). The Celtic Corner is one of the only pubs on Long Island that supports soccer. They have 2 Setanta dishes, the EPL package, and would purchase the MLS Direct Kick if there was enough interest and patronage. They have always been very good about showing Metrostars games in the past. Plus you can get Long Island's best pint of Guiness as well as a British/American dinner. Throw in 2 dart boards, and barkeeper Richie (provided he works that day)...... Any takers?
But I thought that Mitchell's field is in Uniondale Long Island, near the University. As far as I know, Huntington is not next to Uniondale.
Yeah, but it's three bucks extra if you by on the train LIRR can't even get ths Shea commute right (55K and trains once an hour?) On the positive side there should be no security so I could pull a New Jack City whack job on the Metro bench and starting 11 - just gotta find me an automatic. I fully plan on going and booing the ever-living crap out of the whole team from start to finish.
I believe Giovanni Savarese and Jim Rooney just signed for the Rough Riders, if I'm not mistaken. http://uslsoccer.com/home/78374.html http://uslsoccer.com/home/77996.html
Thomas A Fina: I guess that order of chill-pills didn't arrive yet. From West Side Story: "Boy, boy, crazy boy, get cool, boy!"
So does Celtic Corner sound like a good pub of operations for this game? My only concern is that it might be a bit to far from the choo choo.

for the 4 of you from Long Island, you mean? No, just look for Red Card. Follow him. He's the section. Also, make sure you do the following: - Say hi to Grafer's Mom. She's very nice. - Say hi to NYR Metro's Mom's car for me. It's very nice also. - Stand between the practice field and the actual field, so that security has to move you when the players run onto the field. Sometimes they forget, so you can just run onto the field yourself. If you are able to do this, please throw a Barca scarf at Gio, just for sh!ts and giggles. - Sing You've got a hundred SUVs in your parking lot... at least once. Why? Cause the Rough Riders are a suburban club, just a very small one. - Sing Are you Westchester Flames in disguise, just to piss them off. - Ask a team official if you can get Wayne Chrebet's autograph.
i've been to the celtic pub for some euro games. good atmosphere, and friendly workers (who are irish). quick story- during the england-port pk's, johnny middle-aged american sports fan comes and asked some english guy "why are they taking pk's" - "b/c ovetime has past" reply "thats f-ing stupid, they should just keep playing overtime, jeez soccer is stupid. oh, and how come you irish are supporting england, i thought youz hate them" -"i am english".
Closest lirr station is Hempstead. Form a group and cab it. Make arrangements with cab for return trip. I doubt there will be any transportation provided from station to/from stadium like last time. But a call to Metros office might help.
Where is the Celtic pub. I come up to LI 3 or 4 times a year to see family, but I never heard of it. It would be nice to be able to go to a soccer friendly place.
