The Metrostars signed a player development partnership with Long Island Rough Riders of the USL Pro Select League.
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/02/24/sports/soccer/24SOCC.html The team announced a development agreement yesterday with the A-League Long Island Rough Riders, giving the MetroStars three roster spots on the Rough Riders.
Metrostars always had some kind of connection with the Roughriders, and with the Brooklyn Knights and even with the brooklyn italians at one time. If the Staten Vipers had survived they would have had a connection as well.
I like this; I hope to see more cooperation along this line. I didn't realize the Riders were back in the A-League. I thought they were in the PDL. When did they return to the A-League? Where have I been? (Is it really Tuesday?)
I don't think the riders are in the A league. There in some division of the USL. When the rough riders millionaire lawyer forget his name sold the riders (incidently he was the same guy who helped fix the Metropolitian Oval.) The team went down in class to the USL forget what division.
Riders are in the PSL League under the USL A-League is the top division in the USL leagues I believe the Metrostars also got some kind of parternship with the New Jersey Stallions
Riders are in D3, whatever it is now called. Stallions dropped down to D4. The Westchester Flames are also in D3, but NOT in the same division as LI. Now study the following. There will be a quiz tomorrow! http://rough-riders.com/cgi-bin/news.cgi?id=2
If the Rough Riders and the Metrostars were to play each other in the Open Cup and some players had gone between each other, I assume they would be 'cup tied' ? I hope the Metrostars would be willing to have a friendly against the Rough Riders over at Mitchell Park in Uniondale, LI this year, or maybe even a double header with the ROugh Riders and a Metro cup game ?...
There was a published report a few months ago that the Rough Riders had new owners who were planning to return the team to the A League but, for now, they are in the PSL. I think it was the Newsday report which said that this partnership between the Metros and the Rough Riders also involved coordinated efforts to promote international games, presumably at Mitchel Field. I know in the past Mitchel Field has hosted Salvadoran teams; it will be interesting to see who might be brought in, and whether they play the Metros or the Rough Riders.
I didn't realize that Paul Riley was no longer coaching the club. What happened? Did he get fired or did he move on to greener pastures?
The new management has an option to buy. They are experienced soccer people. The current management is also doing a youth team in the USL's Y-league. Their small stadium is in the most valuable part of nassau county, commercial wise. But there is no public transportation and limited parking. With Newsday the only local paper so overwhelmingly ignoring soccer, it is impossible for a pro soccer team to make any money. If only Uncle Phil would do a SF Examiner on them.
