I've been calling them FC Metro for the last few months or so and its sort of catching on...what does everyone think of changing the name?
Just to let you know even it's no longer NY/NJ even though that's what I have down next to my favorite teams.
Yeah i kinda figured...but i wasn't quite sure...If there is a mod out there can you just get rid of NY/NJ for me? thanks
Metropolitan Soccer Club or Metro SC or The Metro, even tho I support them "MetroStars" just sucks. Empire Soccer Club will always be the best name for a team in New York. Gotham City SC would be pretty cool and they could have a bat in the badge. It's not as gay as The Mighty Ducks. I'm kinda sick of US sports teams using the city name and then a goofy nickname.
Amen to that, however soccer is really the only sport where it has no place. Theres no problem with using the city or area and sometimes a nickname (ie..Arsenal Gunners) Even worse is "unpluraled" nicknames like The Fire, The Burn, or ANY team in WNBA or Woosa.
First the present name is NJ Metros. There is no NY. The team is in New Jersey not in New York. The Yankees are not the NY/NJ Yankees and all the NY teams have just the NY. I live in NY and it is silly to put the NY in front of any Jersey team name. I can root for the NJ Devils or FC Metro of New Jersey just fine. Metro FC would just get shortened to Metros which is what we have now. It is a boring name. FC Metro. Somehow that gives them some distinction. If we can get that far maybe we can drop the Metro too I guess I dont like that name.
It's a minor point, but there is no area of London actually called Arsenal. The club was founded by a group of workers from the Woolwich Arsenal Armament Factory, hence Arsenal. And you will never hear or see "Arsenal" and "Gunners" together. It's either just Arsenal or just Gunners/Gooners, not both. As for the NY/NJ issue, I don't see anything wrong with having NY. Even though the stadium's in NJ, it is a club that serves the whole NYC Metro area, not just Jersey (as opposed to the Devils and Nets, who compete with the Rangers/Islanders and Knicks). That said, NY/NJ is sounds awkward and it's lot better without the city name.
skip, you live in ny, but since you're not at the game and it's not in your teams list, i'm guessing you don't support the metros. why is that?
I stand corrected, but i know theres a stop on Picadilly called Arsenal (of course theres also the Wembley stop on Bakerloo and Highbury on Nat'l Rail)...I wasn't sure if it was actually an area so i took a stab. my bad
FC= Football Club, or Futbol Club if its in a Latin team like FC Barcelona (or FC Barcelona Dragons )
Re: Re: MetroStars Name Poll It could be silent, like that symbol Prince used in the 90s. I've grown up hating all New York teams and I'm just now getting over that hatred. But I figured I'll learn about the team more before pledging my alleigance to any team. A little patience please.
Not "FC" and nothing silly. FC and a new name. Does the similarity between Mets and Metros bother you? Different abreviations for the same word
Sorry to be a stickler on symantics, but Mets is an abbreviation for New York Metropolitans, just as Jets is an abbreviation of NY Jetropolitans...heheh And in the future, NEVER make similarities between the Mets and FC Metro... FC Metro: Tradition of excellence Mets: Tradition of SUCKING! go yanks
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: MetroStars Name Poll actually, i think any team with an FC in its name is retarded, especially here in the US. mind you, metrostars is already a pretty crappy name, but trading one for the other would be trading crap for crap and then you also lose some brand identity there as well.
You mean, like the NY Giants and NY Jets? You know, those two teams that play in the same sports complex as the NJ Nets, NJ Devils and the MetroStars? But I guess they're not "Jersey" teams, they just play there.
Re: Re: MetroStars Name Poll Historically that would be correct, as the Giants (who i believe went by just Giants, not any city, for a period of time) played in Yankee Stadium and the Jetropolitans played in Shea. I think they just stuck with NY bc the owners dont want to admit that they play in NJ.
Re: Re: Re: Re: MetroStars Name Poll No, I haven't been to an "FC Metro" game yet. Hopefully this season, I will.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: MetroStars Name Poll maybe you will be able to jump on the Metro bandwagon before they actually win any trophies, now that they're starting to play well.
I wonder how you will all take it the first time a DC supporter crashes onto this board and says "F*C* Metro."
You are incorrect sir. It is simply MetroStars. The "NY/NJ" can perhaps be attributed to Charlie S., who used that designation for WC94? But it has been dropped officially for a few seasons. Interesting how the other two tenants have, in the past couple seasons, re-embraced their NY roots. This has increased the Giants and Jets profile a great deal in terms of merchandising and marketing, after years of shirts, stickers, etc. avoiding the locale (Giants Giants, or Jets Jets). This happened when Cosmos moved over to the Meadowlands, dropping their NY moniker w/o picking up NJ as a substitute. If the Yankees ever left for NJ (which will never happen), they'd remain NY. Now, if the Nets shared MSG (they tried and were denied), would they go back to being the NY Nets? I bet in a heartbeat. If the Olympics come to the metro area, will they call it the NY/NJ Olympiad? Highly doubtful. Before Tab was announced as the league's first player, I loved the Empire Soccer Club, and still think it was a lost opportunity, but again, I'm guessing New Jerseyites would be just as ticked as they were with the Lady Liberty license plates. NY is, after all, the Empire State. The foreign media (as many of you have seen in the past few days re. Timmy) continue to refer to the franchise as NY MetroStars. Go into the front office, and notice how banners, etc. from international sides address this; again, NY Metros. Fans of other MLS sides, even the players, refer to this franchise as NY. Having lived a spit away from the stadium in Wood-Ridge for years, but born and bred upstate, the distance away from Manhattan seemed silly not to refer to living there as NY. Still, the real locals are proudly Jersey. FC Metro is a cool nickname, but let's face it, isn't culturally relevant. I prefer Empire Soccer Club, but that's history. After that, NY MetroStars or just simply MetroStars. And for those of you that think I'm just a NY snob, don't forget that the franchise has hosted a handful of home games on the other side of the Hudson. To the rest of the world, the Meadowlands is the sports complex for major NYC sporting events. Will a stadium in Harrison make this team the NJ MetroStars? Quite frankly, I hope they just leave well enough alone by now and keep it MetroStars.
