    From the other thread: http://www.nj.com/sports/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/1041319848125730.xml

Howard is at $60K trying to re-sign for $240K.
    A. Williams and R. Williams both make $100+K, let's say $110K.
    Jolley re-signed for $120K.
Mathis at $200K. Moreno and Pope at $270K. If Balboa re-signs it will buy for under $100K.

    Moreno $270K
    Pope $270K
    Howard $240K
    Mathis $200K
    Jolley $120K
    A.Williams $110K
    R.Williams $110K
    Balboa $ 90K
    Paule $ 70K
    Addo $ 50K
    Lisi $ 40K
    Grafer $ 35K
    Ziadie $ 30K
    Davis $ 0K (P40, may graduate?)
    Akwari $ 0K (P40)
    Moore $ 0K (Developmental)

    Total $1,635K

Only $65K left for salaried players and we have 5 slots open there and 1 slot for another P40/Development player.

i dunno about the cap anymore, we got oldthar, threw a million dollars at him ,and paid for his crib in the city....i say cut pope's salary and make up for it by giving him fresh bionic legs so he can roam our back line for ages to come

Cap is BS. They can get around it a million ways as they have done for other players on our team and other teams in the past.

MLS does it's share of Cap manipulations. One of the most well documented instances is the $270K Limit on what will be applied to the Cap. Even though players like Lothar and Luis Hernandez made $1M, only $270K was applied to their respective teams Caps.

This is true for Moreno with us this year as he makes over $270K.

But, still there is a Cap in place and we are nearing it (especially if Howard re-signs for what he's asking for). But the rumored trades of A. Williams and R. Williams could free up some nice space for other players.

I read on one of the other boards that teams have until this Saturday to get under the cap. Is this true? If so, the next couple of days could be very interesting!

I don't think this is true-- Etcheverry certainly makes money in excess of the league "maximum," but I haven't heard that said about Moreno.

Moreno may have renegotiated with MLS since then but this was from the Washington Post in November:

    Re: Salary Cap

To answer my own question ... I just found out that teams have until the close of business tomorrow (1/3/03) to get under the cap.

Pope is not worth that much. Especially when compared to what others make.
