I asked Eddie Pope about the fieldturf at the kickoff at Nevada Smith's today. He said he had no problem with it. I asked him about rainy conditions, and he seemed to imply that it remained a good playing surface, better than grass in its uniform character. No lake-size puddles or swamps, I suppose.

Didn't he just play on fieldturf in the match at Seattle?

To be more accurate, that article implies that there won't be football lines when the Metros play weekday games and the NFL plays on the weekend. I would guess that is because of the 24 turnaround time on the painting. So it sounds like a catch-22 once the NFL season starts: weekday game without lines, or weekend game with lines.

"The company promises the paint will be removable over a 24-hour period, which means after the NFL season starts, the MetroStars will be able to play games in the middle of the week without football lines visible on the field. The soccer lines would then be removed and the football markings put in place in time for the Giants and Jets games on the weekends."

Edit: I just took a look at the Metros schedule and the only late season weekday games are Wednesday, August 13 (before the NFL preseason, I think) and Thursday, September 25th. So it probably just applies to that Thursday game against D.C., unless there is a weekend that the Metros are home and both the Giants and Jets are out of town...

And there appears to be just such a weekend on September 21, when the Giants are at Washington and the Jets at New England.

So, if the 24 hour rule applies, I think the Metros will have football lines for four of their last six games. The exceptions will be Thursday 9/25 against D.C. (on national tv) and Saturday 9/20 against the Crew.
