Press speculation in today's (3/16) U.K. tabloids (Daily Star & The Express) are suggesting the Metrostars are interested in Portsmouth striker Mark Burchill. Burchill is 23 years old and has been capped at least six times for Scotland's National Team, and signed for Portsmouth on August 24, 2001 for a transfer fee of some £ 900,000 from Celtic. Burchill has also played on loan for Sheffield Wednesday, Wigan, Dundee, Ipswich, and Birmingham City.

The Daily Star says, "The former Scotland star has been frozen out at Portsmouth and now the Major League Soccer club, who boast Mo Johnston as their assistant manager, want Burchill..."

Not sure if this has been posted yet.

He's the right age. He could gel nicely with this young squad.

For what it's worth, I believe the transfer fee was 600,000 pounds. He was transferred from Celtic to Portsmouth in August 2001 after complaining about not getting playing time.

I would have to believe that Mo knows the book on this guy. Hopefully Mo can get the most out of this guy (should the rumors be true).

I think we're okay in the forward position. We have Magee, Woly, Taylor, Nugent and Gaven. Do we need another forward? I rather get midfielder (ala Macca).

You're confident with that strike force? Sounds like expectations without Mathis upfront anymore aren't that high...

seems that anyone with scottish great-grandparents has been linked to the metrostars because of mo johnston. after having paid so much for the dude, do you really think mls/metros are going to come up with that kind of transfer fee?

They paid that much 2.5 years ago and he hasn't worked out. They're probably happy to get him off the books.

Isn't Portsmouth the team that had no use of Ruiz?

I watched him play for celtic and he has some definite skills but unfortunately he was not going to replace Larsson.....

he hurt himself by demanding to be sent out of Celtic Park and floundered in the lower divisions of England.

I think if he can find a stable environment, get some playing time, he will be a very good asset....certainly better on the ball the Woly
