    Metros Front Office

The following has been posted in the Metrostars forum, a message to their supporters from their front office:

"To ESC Metro Members and Members-

Thank you for supporting the MetroStars all season long through what has been probably our most challenging season to date. Way back last February during the ESC GM's forum we made a special offer to the ESC.

The offer was that if the ESC Membership collectively purchased 50 or more Special ESC Metro- Memberships with the Away Game Jersey - we would fund the snacks and bevy's for one of your away game road trips.

We are happy to announce that you exceeded that number and 75 ESC members now own Metro-Memberships. As a result, we are loading up your bus tomorrow with snacks and most importantly beverages . We are also throwing in MetroStars tailgate chairs for everyone on the bus as an added bonus.

We sincerely appreciate your support this season, and your membership delivered for us this past off season. So- thanks!

Also, as you all know- we are playing our playoff games at Riverfront Stadium in Newark. We have set aside section 121 which is a corner section right near one of the goals. There is plenty of rail space to hang ESC banners- so hopefully you'll be happy with the location.

Tickets are $25 in advance ($30 at the door)- we're not sure if day of game sales will be possible. With only 9000 available seats, we expect a sell out in advance. So if we have seats and we can make accommodations for day of game sales we will- however it will most likely be a pre- game sellout. So if you can, please make arrangements for advance purchase. If you already own Metro Memberships in Section 101- Section 121 tickets in Newark will be shipped to you.

Thanks again for the support- enjoy the snacks and bevy's on the bus tomorrow ! We'll see you next Sunday at 6PM in River Front Stadium in Newark!

Catch the MetroStars on the MSG Network this Saturday, September 21st when they take on the New England Revolution in a battle to make the MLS playoffs. It's live from Foxboro. The "Game Night" pre-game show starts at 7:00 p.m.

In other words, the Metros front office is already considering qualification a foregone conclusion. Granted, they have a lot in their favor, but still...

... they're looking past the Revs.

    Just some food for thought.

Come on. This team has been wretched lately-- there's no one looking past the Revs.

The truth of the matter is that even losing to you guys, the Metros have a better than average shot at backing into the playoffs.

I don't take the playoffs for granted, but I'm glad they're taking the time to explain the plans for what very well could be a logistical nightmare. It would be far, far worse if they didn't try to get the word out a week ahead of time.

You might have a problem with the indicative mood of the MFO's message, but the subjunctive mood is disappearing in general. It's pretty clear that all this depends on a very big condition, that the Metros make the playoffs.

If you meant that as cliche, "inspirational" material to put up on the fictional locker room bulletin board, you're way off base. With Howard and Mathis out, there's no way anyone associated with this team sees this as an easy win.

It's typical Metros arrogance, the apple falling not far from the tree in that organization, this no matter how good their playoff chances are...

... and I am using it as "cliche, 'inspirational' material" because it often works, and the Revs can use every advantage they can, especially when a message such this comes from Metros HQ...

It's not going to be any easy match, but it sure sounds like Metro doesn't have much of a care about it, so tough...

"Arrogant", right. Trying to explain to thousands of fans how a potential mess with ticketing is going to be avoided, on a few days notice, sounds like GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE. Not "arrogance."

It's funny, and not ha-ha funny, that intellectual dishonesty allows absolutely any evidence to bolster your point. If the Metros didn't bother explaining arrangements in a concise and clear way, they would be decried here as "arrogant."

I'd rather they had prefaced all of it with "In the event we make the playoffs," but the subtext seems crystal clear. Obviously, if the Metros do not make the playoffs, the given arrangements are off. How is that difficult to understand?

And furthermore, the Metros can make the playoffs tonight with a Kansas City loss, or Sunday with a Chicago loss, regardless of what happens at Foxboro tomorrow.

You're totally grasping at straws, Evan.

There are straws? No one told me there were straws. If I had known there were straws I would have started grasping for them myself much, much sooner.

As a Revs season ticket holder, regardless of how you want to look at this issue, I did appreciate that the Metro's front office actually posted on these boards. I have long wanted for the Revs front office to address some of the issues raised here.

"Arrogant", right. Trying to explain to thousands of fans how a potential mess with ticketing is going to be avoided, on a few days notice, sounds like GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE. Not "arrogance."

    * Well, with no true stadium to play in, I guess Metro HQ doesn't have a choice now, do they?

It's funny, and not ha-ha funny, that intellectual dishonesty allows absolutely any evidence to bolster your point.

    * "Intellectual dishonesty?" Is that fancy Metrospeak for "Self-delusion?" Now that's ha-ha funny, no, wait... that's "knee-slapping funny." A Metrofan calling me out for a lack of evidence to bolster my point? Talk about the pot calling the kettle black :)

If the Metros didn't bother explaining arrangements in a concise and clear way, they would be decried here as "arrogant."

    * Well, if they did so in a way that was intellectually honest, providing such information while statingIF they make the playoffs rather than implying it... maybe it's just me, but the last thing I'd want to hear as a Metrofan is more spin from the front office.

I'd rather they had prefaced all of it with "In the event we make the playoffs," but the subtext seems crystal clear. Obviously, if the Metros do not make the playoffs, the given arrangements are off. How is that difficult to understand?

I work for Harvard Haig, better 'splain that one to me using very small words ;-)

And furthermore, the Metros can make the playoffs tonight with a Kansas City loss, or Sunday with a Chicago loss, regardless of what happens at Foxboro tomorrow.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather not accept my invitation to the playoffs by proxy. But then, if Metros are already looking past the Revolution ;-)

You're totally grasping at straws, Evan.

You know Haig, you lost this debate when you assumed I was making an intellectual rather than an emotional case.

    Cheers!

The Revs did the same thing!

The Revs did the same with their mailing to season ticket holders. It was mailed yesterday, Friday, September 20, 2002 according to the postmark and received today, prior to the Revs v. NJ/NY game. The Revs haven't clinched anything, yet, nothing in the literature refers to potential playoff games. It is absolutely assumed. Furthermore, one of the programs involves renewing tickets for next year providing a discount for playoff tickets. What happens if the Revs don't make it? Will next years tickets still be available at the discounted rate provided in this program?

So, the Metrostars are not the only ones looking past this game.

This line is the only quality thing to come out of this thread. Thanks for the sig!

    JMac

PS: The front office people only care about selling tickets. I think it was fairly obvious that the entire thing hinged on the Metros actually making the playoffs. The idea that it could be some way of overlooking Saturdays game is nuts, especially considering the fact that the author of that post also stated something along the lines that this has been a rough year for the team.

    it's called marketing, good lord.

metros management looking past this game? don't be absurd! they're shaking in their boots about pretty much everything right now, and some of them probably hope the metros don't go through so they won't have to deal with playing in Newark. No howard, no mathis? terrible, terrible performances lately? any idiot could tell you that there is no reason for the metros to be overconfident.

Can we not assume that there is another reason metro management is using this tense, despite its obvious flaw? MARKETING! especially when talking to hardcore fans, they want to come off as a confident organisation. does that mean they are? hell no! everything out of the front office must be positive positive positive. people want to think they are supporting a winner, even if they obviously aren't.

i can't quote a textbook or give you numerous citations, but I'll wager that most pro-sports teams would phrase things that way. at the beginning of the season, should they say "come out and see the what could possibly be exciting games" when technically all the home games could be terrible bores? there was a playoff ticket in my book of season tix--is that too presumptuous of them?

that is a spectacularly huge chip on your shoulder. don't waste all that energy on this nothing issue. you'll need it for cursing the metros when we make the playoffs...oops, that is, if we make the playoffs of course. wouldn't want to be overconfident (couldn't if i tried in this case).
