I got this story as a link from mlsnet.com. It looks like the metros aren't settled yet with their offense for the season. It basically says that this guy Pablo brenes is an u - 23 for costarica and the metros contacted him because they are interested in their services.
YEAH!!! A Costa Rican....BUT.. We dont need anymore strikers... If anything they should look for wingers, Like Drummond or Wallace..
http://www.prensalibre.co.cr/2004/marzo/25/deportes06.php in spanish though, maybe someone could translate any important details.
I think that's what we've been looking for....assuming he's a goodp player. I dont know much about him, but most of the guys in the CR U-23 are good.
Wow. This would be a huge signing. I think he would be other than the average Digi, the only left sided player on the lineup. If he is any good, this would be a superb addition, and hopefully stabilize the left flank which has been horrible for the past year and a half.
With all these transitional internationals that the metros might have, is it after 24 years old that they are considered seniors? That means in 2 years , we'll probably have 5 SI technically speaking. No?
Although it is worrying that such a large percentage of our team isn't American (taylor, galvan rey, amado, vaca, this winger, ziade, and bonseu). That is 7 out of 11 players who would most likely be the starters! Having said that, I hope this deal pulls through. Other than the Galvan Rey deal, this to me would be the most important off season move.
Its not that big of a deal really just look at all the top clubs in the world, 80% of their team are forigners.
Yeah, but all of those clubs are from other countries so.....(just kidding). I heard we are playing a 2-2-6. Can anyone confirm?
Of course you are right about that. However, part of the reason the league was created was to develop American talent, no matter their background.
Close. 2-3-5. Garber's declared this "NPSL throwback season" and players will be wearing position numbers. Can't wait to see who wears #10 (Inside Right?). =NLK=
it's a good point, but if you take a look at the big picture...MLS has done a phenomenal job of keeping the great majority of American talent within MLS...some of the younger players simply want to go directly overseas, and some (Timmy, McBride, etc) eventually are going to want to test themselves at higher levels...however, what you state implies that perhaps the development of American talent could be hindered by bringing in an increasing number of foreigners...i'm not sure i can think of very many American players in MLS right now who deserve to be getting a lot more playing time on their teams, but aren't because there is a foreigner playing instead...a different sort of example woulud be a kid like Mike Magee who did actually gain good experience by being thrust into the fire like he did last year, but it does young players just as much good to have to compete for their positions at that age, and learn behind a player like Galvan (at least hopefully Sergio becomes a positive "role model" of sorts)...i would agree it's a difficult balance of continually trying to bring the league to higher levels of talent while not stunting our own players' growth, but with that said, i think it's one of the things MLS has done best since its inception..
Ziadie's pretty much an American and a Jamaican. Vaca's rapidly becoming an American, too, in my opinoin. I'm not that concerned about having "too many" foreigners. The team lost Mathis and Howard to European opporutnities, but Pope, Walker, Clark, Gaven, Wolyniec, Magee, Gaven, Lisi, DiGi will all probably get a lot of PT on this squad, and represent a broad cross-section of the population of the Metro area. Galvan the Greater (hopefully he outplays last year's model) and Amado are also pretty representative of our soccer community, which benefits greatly from a large number of first- and second-generation spanish-speaking immigrants. Two Jamaicans - well, that's not crazy in New York, either. I just want these players to fit in well and thrive as a group. Bob, Nick & co. kept us waiting on pins and needles as they tried to find the right guys, but we've brought in a lot of players with a lot of potential. And every player on this team still pronounces it "Gol!"
I know nothing about the player, might be good signing. But again, why are we on the eve of the season starting and we are in the process of bringing aboard two players likely to be regulars in the starting 11? I'm sorry, but for my money I would like to see a full compliment of players who have been praciticing together for at least a few weeks on opening day. It's bad for the team, and disrespectful to the fans. It really is.
thats fine...dont follow professional sports...if it were so easy to get these players in with plenty of time before the beggining of the season, we'd obviously be doing it...while ideal, it's unrealistic and i'd rather us be patient and find the right players then rush to sign as many players as possible after the season is over to appease a few fickle and impatient fans..
That's very nice. But the purpose of a club in any league is to win to whole thing. If foreigners will accomplish that end, go for it unapologetically. Within the rules and guidelines or the league, anything goes. Imagine what it's going to be like with the coming expansions trying to fill rosters with quality home-growns. Good luck to you.
I totally agree, and it would've been nice for someone, maybe Ricardo Clark or Johnny Walker, to give me a call this off-season to see how I'm doing.
