I seem to recall that after Friedel saved to PKS in Korea, it was pointed out that only two other keepers had saved two PKs in the course of play (i.e., not tie-breakers) in the World Cup, and one of them was Meola in 1990. I'm trying to confirm that but can't find anything on either the FIFA or US Soccer sites. Can anyone help? Thanks.
It wasn't Meola. It was Poland's Jan Tomaszewski in 1974. He stopped PK's from Sweden and W. Germany.
That make two, but I seem to recall being told there were three in all, and that Meola was one of them.
in 1990 Meola saved one against Czechoslovakia, and then in the next match vs Italy, Vialli (i think it was) took and missed another PK, shot it wide of the net I believe. So there were two PK's against Meola, neither successful in WC 1990...
