There's a great thread running on the San Jose boards, and I thought it might be fun to do the same here. It's the off-season, so what the heck. What are the most memorable goals you remember from Cosmos/Metros history over the past 33 years? (Throw in the New Jersey Eagles, too, if you'd like). A few that come to my mind: 1) Pele's bicycle kick goal in 1976. 2) Steve Hunt's Soccer Bowl '77 poach. 3) Giorgio Chinaglia's seven-goal performance in one playoff game. 4) Roberto Cabanas's over-the-head back-heel in 1983. 5) Nicola Caricola's own goal in 1996. 6) John Wolyniec's classic volley in 2003. Who else?
Since you have included Giorgio. How about Clint's 5 goals against Dallas. Also, how can you leave out his end to end dash to score? A goal that was replayed around the world.
My first ever trip to the Swamp, that backwards-heel scissorkick by Roberto Cabanas was the most amazing single act I think I'll ever witness from any athlete in any sport.
I agree. I don't believe that I will ever see a goal that surpasses that Cabanas goal. And that was only one of many goals that Cabanas scored with some flare.
I saw giorgio score a ton of goals at GS. he was fantastic a poaching around the goal . on the flip side I'v seen him out run players for 50 yards and score. if i have any memorable Cosmos goal giorgio scored em. Dennis (the Menace) Tuart scored some good goals too.
Gio Savarase had some memorable goals for the Metro. The bike v. Tampa in the 3 goal come back sticks w/ me. Tab scored a Golazo right after in the same match. All with a crowd of 53,000
How about Gio Savarese's bicycle to complete the comeback against Tampa in front of like 40,000 in 97 (I think). Or Peter Vermes limping shootout goal in game one of the series against DC. I could not believe what I was seeing.
As far as Giants Stadium goes... Ramos' rocket in the first allstar game was impressive, but Woly's goal this year and the clint dribbling through the entire Dallas squad goals are big highlights. Not to mention any goal Gio got off the bench to keep us in the game.
Yikes! How could I forget to list Clint's zig-zag-through-five-guys goal? That was the best goal I had seen at Giants Stadium since the one by Cabanas. I also just remembered Carlos Alberto's shootout goal in, I think, 1978 or 1979, where he scooped the ball up in the air before lobbing it over the goalie. Quite inventive at the time.
Most memorable for me would be a three way tie between Cabanas' backwards bike, Carlos Alberto's juggling act in the shoot-out vs. Minnesota in the '78 conference semifinals second leg, and Beckenbauer's final goal with the Cosmos - a 35 yard full volley off a goal kick against Chicago in '83 at Giants Stadium.
I remember Tino Letteri getting advice from Geoff Barnett, the Kicks starting keeper who was injured at the time, before each of the Cosmos shootout attempts. Barnett's advice was on the money until Alberto's turn. I also remember Barnett shrugging his shoulders before Franz put the game away on the Cosmos next attempt.
Unfortunatly, due to my age I have never watched a single Cosmos game or witnessed any of the Cosmos goals mentioned above. Those goals sound absolutely amazing. Does anyone know of a Cosmos highlight film and where I can get it? Thanks in advanced.
Villegas' goal versus Tampa Bay to cap off a splendid 3-2 comeback-the first time we really hated Diallo was in that game in 2000. That goal by Villegas propelled us for the rest of the season. I remember the crowd, about 26-27,000 simply exploding and Villegas rushing over to the corner and tossing his jersey into the crowd. After that, was Mathis, last year (2002), it had to be August, versus DC when he tapped in this little goal to end the match. In front of a pretty good crowd (maybe 20k) and to sink DC's playoff hopes (and they summarily sunk ours later in the season). I remember the ESC that day, first 20 minutes of the match, we never stopped singing. And we marched out that day, did we ever march out.
That was on my short-list of goals that season. http://www.geocities.com/castmind/mathisdc.html It was 8/25/02, and in many ways it showed all of the best qualities of the team: Williams with a nice, long delivery (he had quite a few), Faria's speed and energy, and of course, Mathis' finish.
To red&black1 who wants to see the Cosmos highlights, go to the New York Cosmos official website and buy the glory years highlight DVD. Great stuff. http://www.nycosmos.com
Eddie Gaven's last minute of overtime, pushing off Ryan Nelsen, @ D.C. to win the game, after playing a man down for over an hour, this past season.
I agree, is time to change the subyect, Cosmos was a diferent ball game, and never a USA one. MLS is America game, that is and make the diference, let's go Metros.
Valencia's golden goal in the playoffs against Dallas. I was disappointed with the tie. 10 seconds was left and I began to lose hope for the win. Then Walsh thought about cracking one from 30. But instead he feeds into to Valencia and Valencia with a quick turn breaks free and scores for the OT win.
Covers the years 1977 to 1982. Worth the price if you are a Cosmos fan or just want a piece of US soccer history for your collection.
The OT goal against the Crew at Giants Stadium got me off my seat and jumped thru the ceiling. Man that was really a fabulos, unexpeted goal. Even though it wasn't on TV only during Sports Desk. Amado Guevara's OT winner in the Quarterfinals of the US Open Cup. Clint's end to end goal was fabulos. His 5 against also against Dallas. Petter Villegas long distance blast against the defunct Tampa Bay Mutiny. I also liked and there are so many of them. The goals by Giovanni Savarese. Alexi Lalas winner in 1998 just before the clock struck 00:00 against the San Jose (Then) Clash. I hate to say it but that was a cool one. Other than that we shall see what happens in 2004.
