Did anyone else notice the chimes during the CSN broadcast Saturday night? I took me a couple of times to place the melody.

It was inside the stadium to announce the Zard (KC kids club) prize winner. It was part of many annoying stadium things they did.

Yeah, that really started to piss me off after a while. I hope DCU doesn't do anything that stupid during a game.

We couldn't figure that out, either. The Wizards "in-game presentation" left quite a bit to be desired. They cut out the music and the Cauldron was miked at times, which was good, but they added a guy with a headset microphone trying to get some cheers started - stuff like "Z-A-R-D-S. 'Zards! 'Zards! 'Zards" and "Try, try, try and break the tie!" It sounded very awkward and random. Friends who were in the Cauldron later told me that they were having an over/under on how many games the guy would last.

They also have a promotion whereby if the Wizards score during a random 3-minute span (it was around the 75-minute mark for this game), everybody gets free Papa John's. That span was the loudest the crowd got (outside of the goals, that is), but they didn't score, so the Travelling Nest turned into the Pizza Nazis, shouting "No pizza for you! You want Twisty Bread? Three Dollars!"

That said, the Mystics were great hosts at the tailgate, and there were a number of times during the game that we could hear them from diagonally across the big stadium, so any cracks about lack of support in Kansas City are archaic at best.

We use the same Jetson's chime to announce incoming e-mail messages. It took until halftime for me realize that it was from KC :)

In the chat room I had the aggrivating boldness to type "the jetsons" or "meet george jetson" everytime they did that.. Sorry Knave.
But I am glad you guys got to the match and back alright... how many ended up making the trip?

also, the mystics did have their big flag out which looked great on TV when we saw it..

p.s.s. this is my 911th post.. bum bum bum.

It looked and sounded like they'd do the chime every time KC turned the ball over or an attack broke down... which was often.

The first couple of times I heard it on the TV broadcast (I was watching on FSW), I thought it was the typical PA chime that I've heard in European stadiums...a short 3 note chime to get your attention followed by some sort of announcement over the PA.

Of course, by about the third time, I was singing "...his boy Elroy" following each chime.

Ok, to try and explain some things...

The Cauldron is miked, something we started last year to try and spread the chants and get others involved. Like anything its working slowly. I am in the front corner of the section and coordinate with a Wizards worker when they turn them on. Sometimes I wait for him, sometimes I go without him and they turn the mikes on after we've started up.

The Jetsons sound had something to do with the Zards (as explained, our brand new youth supporters club that gives kids 15 & under $5 tix). The guy you heard was the Zardmesiter (see the KC boards for explainations of this jackhole).

I've already emailed the organization about the Zards trying to do cheers while the Cauldron is doing a cheer. Because frankly in the last season our numbers have gone to about 100 and our volume is really getting up there. Then we get this guy trying to get little kids to do gay cheers. Funny thing was, a lot of the kids were even making fun of him.

The Zards, the Zardmeister, the Jetson stuff was all knew to the Mystics as well. Our in stadium production got a lot better last year, only to be set back by the stuff they pulled Saturday.

Thanks for the compliment Lanky, we're really trying to get something going here in KC. Slowly we've got quite a following, who come stand in the Cauldron and sing.

Well, good on ya Ben. Keep up the effort, I could hear a few chants.

But the Jetsons theme and the buffoon on the mike would almost ruin the game for me... I'd rather have piped in music.

That Jetson's thing, in particular, was REALLY getting annoying by games end.

At one point we aped his rhythm with "Job, job. Get a real job."

Didn't bother me as much as the "Charge!" music.

By the way, there was jock rock piped in over the loudspeakers. Review the tape if you don't believe me.

I don't remember hearing any, but you could be right. if it was, there wasn't too much of it and it wasn't as obtrusive as I've heard it in other places.

I know, I was too subtley sarcastic in my earlier post.

I'm happy KC turned out a good crowd, but they were kitchen-sinking their "off the field experience" crap.

i KNEW IT. i could've swore it was coming over the PA. that's not a bad idea to try to get the whole stadium involved with chants/songs. but that didn't seem to be too well executed at all. the crowd did seem pretty good though guys, well done.

It is a good idea, because the size and openness of the stadium doesn't hold in the sound too well (which is why hearing the Cauldron unamplified was impressive). But there was no sense of continuity to it. Every seven minutes or so you would hear 15 seconds of singing.
