Media Monitor 5/3 vs. Revs [R]

Here's what I could grasp of the 11pm TV coverage:

KNTV 11 - Chris Flanigan a little bit rushed this week...the "hurry up we're going off the air" music started to play while he was showing his highlight. Chose the Ching goal as the highlight. No abz from Landon meant no audible sigh from Diane Dwyer this week. Credit for the try, credit for the proper highlight, credit for getting it in before going off air...demerits for making it look like an afterthought. Grade: B-

KRON 4 - Vernon Glenn trying to be cute...showed Llamosa's OG as the match highlight..."gee, how often do you see this?" Gee, Vern, about every 3 weeks this season so far. However, Glenn does get extra credit for having video of Cal Rugby's loss to Air Force (ZOOMIE!) in the college rugby championships. Grade: C+

KPIX 5 - Winner and new champion, Rick Quan (also formerly from Hawaii, BTW). Not only did KPIX run all 4 MLS scores on the crawl, Quan showed the Ching goal as the highlight, and gave the match perspective by telling his audience that the Quakes were unbeaten at 3-0-1. Grade: A-...he would have gotten a straight A if he had shown both goals -- my only criticism.

KGO 7 - Didn't catch what Mike Shumann may or may not have done while watching other highlights. However, from where his cast was headed I have a feeling he's the only 11pm'er not to show video...he may have given the score again as a postscript. Grade: INC

Anyone who can shed light on KGO's 11pm or KTVU's 10pm SportsWrap please feel free to embellish.

 

Remember though that Fonzi gets about 15 minutes to cover the day in sports vs. the other stations which allot only 3-5 minutes.

Also, consider today's Merc where soccer coverage is "above the fold"...and baseball appears at the bottom of the page.

 

At least the Merc goes to the effort of finding a stringer to write the story instead of compiling a story "from wire reports". It only makes fiscal sense for the level of coverage that we get. At least the Merc is putting in some logistical effort.

 

Also have to give credit to KRON-4's locally-produced "Latin Eyes" program. Caught a glimpse this morning while channel surfing of what looked like a good-sized feature on the club with interviews from Ramiro Corrales and Arturo Alvarez...and an interjection that was classic FY ("we picked up some good players and I think we'll do well this season").
