How does one go about getting them? Is it to late?

Don't worry mod...I'll place a similar post under media also.

Usually the host FA (USSF) sets up a host committee. This host committee then sets up a press committee to deal with all press requests. Sometimes the press committee is just the regular press office with a few more interns.

Usually you have to be a recognised member of the press, i.e., write for a known paper or mag. It is easier to get writing credentials than photo or broadcast. Also, it is frequently your editor, rather than you, who applies for you. If you are owner operated - small footie mag with 2-3 part-timers as staff, you will probably have to submit copies to show you are serious. A stapled home printed Word document will not cut it! If they have not heard of you or your publication, be prepared for scrutiny - that's what the interns are for. If you are from a smaller paper or mag., what usually happens is that you are assigned after all the big and medium boys are assigned. What can happen then is that you are given ancillary press seating - not always in the press box.

If you are serious about this, start currying favour with the USSF's Press Office NOW! You don't have to mention the WWC, but you could ask for credentials for the next few games. Get to know the people there.

Another avenue of approach is to get in contact with your local footie team's press officer. He or she will have a wealth of contacts and anyone worth his or her salt will be connected in Chicago.

I write a weekly column for www.soccer365.com and features for www.a-league.com.

I've covered the USMNT in the past and were able to get creds for them with little problem. I also cover the local team and have freelanced in the past.

FIFA is new ground for me.

The USSF decides the local stuff and the international goes through FIFA with the USSF being involved in the decision.
