I don't know. I think the Williams sisters get plenty of good pub from the media. Sometimes being so good can create a backlash and some people will resent it. But the Williams sisters have had it good. Most in the media would say they are good for tennis. This guy talks too much. Can you imagine what he would have said if somebody had tried to stab one of his daughters like they did to Monica Seles?
This is surprising. He tends not to mouth off usually until both of his daughters have been eliminated from a grand slam event.
They are racist in some ways, but Serena gets good publicity over here in England there is a section of the media that tends to be racist i agree but the Willaims sister get more good publicity than bad.
The reason they have made tennis boring is first based on the fact that they dominated the game. This kind of backlash often happens when people root for the underdog. Secondly is the fact that they are not the prettiest flowers in the bunch IMO. Sharapova on the other hand is (although I don't like her based on the third reason). When it comes to women's game at least, looks play a major part. Why do you think few people like Mauresmo? Thirdly is their attitude and behaviour. People like Sampras, Federed and Agassi (although I don't like Agassi either) have a down to earth attitude despite being amazingly good. Davenport is not particularly special by any means but she has a nice attitude and doesn't do the weird girly things the Williams sisters do. How many non-Aussies like Hewitt?? So the reason for their unpopularity with the media goes to how the public view them and the media as usual chase the ratings. If they show Sharapova they are bound to get a bigger audience. However having said all that, I have personally not noticed this as the BBC at least has been more than fair in showing everyone (in particular the Brits while they were in it ). So I think Richie boy should leave his moaning to when it has at least got an element of truth to it!
He's wrong. The sports media is NOT racist, but they are very sexist. Women's sports just do not sell papers the same way that men's sports do. And tennis? Let's be serious here. It's a great sport that I love to play but very few people follow it the way they do oh, say SOCCER!! (and when's the last time you saw women's soccer make a headline! The last time I remember it making a headline was when the US won the women's world cup, and the headline was "Woman Soccer Player Takes Off Top"!) Women's sports make headlines when the winner is hot. That is the definition of sexism in my book.
Richard's certifiable. And he's wrong. How the f*** can he argue with a straight face his girls have been shunned by the sports media?
"Media" are racists? What the hell does that mean anyway? ****************. Anyway, If you were to do an analysis of a population, and then do an analysis of those working in the Electronic and Print media sector of that population, there is no way that you'd find that those Media Professionals would be more likely to have racist tendancies. The dude needs a serious ass-kicking. I hate stage-parents.
Hmmm. I find Venus desirable because she's built like an Amazon. And Serena does exude sex appeal in an opulent sort of way. Still, I have to admit that if I'm the one in charge of the fantasy but I'm limited to just one tennis player, I'd choose the Russian girl (however you spell her name) over either.
Have you seen that beer commercial where a guy fantasizes about having two women and they turn out to be insufferable nags ("I need to work on my fantasies!")? With that caveat, my fantasy would involve both Williams sisters.
Actually, I think they made tennis boring by turning the women's game more into what men's tennis has become: 2 people trading serves. Before th Williams sisters you saw some fairly good rallys in women's tennis. Now it's "Toss the ball up, swing and grunt, ace or fault" just like the men's game, and since they were dominate with that style every other female player had to either get on board or duke it out for whatever leftovers the Williams' left for them. Aren't the ratings for women's tennis consistently higher than those of the men's game, at least here in the US? Men's tennis is boring, and the Williams sisters play tennis like men.
Both sisters have been favorably covered by the media; perhaps the media losing interest because that although the Williams sisters are athletic and accomplished, they are still ugly, in other words, not a racial issue at all, just a realistic one?
Women in tennis skirts...and fairly attractive ones these days....and the games are actually good now that Kornacova or whatever her name was isn't playing anymore. I don't think womens' ratings are going to lose to mens' anytime in the future.
If Richard was talking about missing, kidnapped or killed black women, then he'd have a slightly better point. Since I'm his future son-in-law, I'll bring that up to him at Thanksgiving dinner. Once I decide which one of the two to marry, and which one to make my mistress. (Didn't say I planned to be a GOOD son-in-law.)
If you remember these matches...well, that's really the problem isn't it? None of the finals were as good as what we saw yesterday. They just don't seem to bring out the best in each other when they play-a tough thing when your playing against you sister for sure. Especially Venus who never looks at ease playing Serena. A funny moment yesterday was the camera caught Davenport's mom at one point giving Richard the "cut it" sign with her hand as if she was telling him "enough!" He does make you cringe in that, "please spare the kids the humilation," kind of way. As for the other part of the boring equation, you can sum it up in one word: depth. Womens' tennis is very poor in that department. The 6-0, 6-1, walks in the parks that the top women get in the opening rounds, are not the staple in the men's game.
Apart from the incredibly obvious point that men will always root for the pretty girl in tennis, and the williams sisters only appeal to those who have a curious liking of muscle definition in their women, the fact that there is two of them makes their "domination" of the sport slightly misleading, as there are two chances of a williams sister winning. If there was only one of them, and two Sharapovas, people might find their dominance boring too. On second thoughts, if there were two Sharapovas I'd want them in every final. Every final there is, Woman's final, doubles final, the men's final, the FA Cup Final, you name it, I'd want them there.
Men's tennis is great. Women's game is a comedy compared to it. That's like saying that women's basketball is better becuse there are no dunks
