I love Radja as much as the next Roma fan but Zaniolo alone makes it a great move. Roma hit the lottery there.

Team is clearly playing and moving the ball better lately. We didnt look totally sound defensively tonight, but it mattered little in this particular game.

Sadly it's all too late re top 4, but we might yet have a shot at the EL if we can continue to improve.

...and what a goal from Nicky Zan....

Anybody still want to shunt Zaniolo out wide so Lorenzo can play behind the striker?

I get that Fonseca and EDF have their formations, but we never should have moved away from the back 3. Over the last 4-5 years or so, it's the only formation where everyone looks comfortable. And probably the only formation where our midfield doesn't get rolled and smoked.

Cardinalli is our 3rd choice keeper so Fuzato should have been given a chance. He may b our new Alisson, who knows? Or may be Stekelenburg.

So basically all of Zaniolo Pellegrini Mkhitarian and even Cristante and Pastore perform best at AM.
Pellegrini and Cristante sucks a little at CM, not to mention how disaster at DM

Club politics are at play. Pellegrini being a Roma boy is needed as a poster boy for the locals who have become used to such a player as a key part. We simply have to start putting the best pieces in their best position and ignore that. Its really not that complicated but it means making some tough calls. Still leads to a better outcome.

Its beyond obvious to me Pellegrini's best position can be in cm given his
technical skills and passing ability. He will get more time in build up play to pick those passes. Something you dont get in the 10 and we see what happens more often than not when he is closed down quickly. He isnt a Zaniolo or a Totti at shielding and turning with the ball. Will people still say its just youth or confidence when hes doing the same things in 2 years? Sometimes you've got to make hard calls and move on.

He might need encouraging to play cm and he would need to up his work rate but it would be the best for all involved. He would have to compete with Diawara but there are also question marks about his fitness. Both need a Veretout type beside them.

Its either that or sell and move along. Zaniolo has to be the player to make the center piece of the team for as long as we can keep him if Roma performing with consistency is the main objective. One meeting would be enough to clarify this all to him. If he sees himself as a 10 only then it is what it is.

Zaniolo has the skill set to play wide or as an AM/CF and his skill set won't be wasted in any of those positions. As good as Zaniolo is the question about him is still his defensive commitment. When you put him as an AM if he's not willing commit to playing defense that gives the opposition free reign in the middle of the field and that's the most dangerous territory to concede territory for free.

Fans need to be realistic, there is almost no chance Zaniolo is going to be here in 3 years. He will probably be the biggest capital gain Roma have ever seen if he keeps progressing and it's certainly in Roma best interest to make sure he maximizes his potential to get top dollar for him.

On another note, Diawara quietly had a really great game.

He has the workrate, he just needed his attitude checked. Hopefully the public dressing down was enough to keep him on the right track but in a 3-4-2-1 this becomes less of an issue. He might be good out wide but he is still not anywhere near what he can be in the center. When a player can be a monster running with the ball from the center then you play him there as thats special and game changing. Its very simple logic to building a team by putting your best pieces in their position first and then deal with the rest after. If hes only going to be here for a few years, lets enjoy him destroying teams from the center of the pitch with those 20-30 yard runs frequently.

I’ve been saying this since 2018.

Football is funny sometimes. Lorenzo gets subbed in as a no.10 for the first time ever in a derby and the ball immediately falls near him in front of an empty goal and here we are 2 years later, still pretending he’s the new Totti.

Its a lot easier to teach a player defensive awareness than it is to teach him how to be a no.10. Pellegrini is horrendous in tight spaces, and a no.10 must be incredibly good in tight places to be successful.
